Simple Symphony I, II, IV, by Benjamin Britten, Arr. Harold Chung Chin Long

โ€œSimple Symphony, Op. 4,โ€ composed by Benjamin Britten in 1934, is dedicated to Audrey Alston (Mrs. Lincolne Sutton), his childhood viola teacher. The work draws on eight themes from Brittenโ€™s childhood compositions and consists of four movements, originally written for string orchestra.

The first movement, โ€œBoisterous Bourrรฉe,โ€ is a lively Baroque dance with a fast tempo and upbeat rhythm, capturing vibrant energy to evoke excitement and joy in the audience. In contrast, โ€œPlayful Pizzicatoโ€ has a lighthearted, whimsical character, primarily featuring pizzicato technique, where the strings are plucked rather than bowed. The โ€œTrolicsome Finaleโ€ provides an energetic and jovful conclusion, showcasing contrasting moods and intensities. The piece reflects themes of childhood and innocence, drawing from Brittenโ€™s early musical imagination.
