PREFACE OF ONLINE BOOK “Cybertecture by James Law”

“I believe that we are of one world, and architecture is a language that binds us together in this increasingly connected world.

Sharing ideas, ideals, innovations, insights through a global architecture of the future that embraces social, regional, environmental, cultural and technological diversity, I believe will open up new horizons for a better planet for all.

This is my journey of Cybertecture

This architectural journey comes from a deep set belief that human kind are the engineers of our own destiny. Humanity strives constantly to be Superman, using the molecules around us to craft new materials and tools to further shape our space. This I coin as the “Superman Complex” is most evident in man’s craft of architecture. Our architecture has been visible evidence of man’s contribution to our civilisation through the eons. Our architecture is our engineering crafting our land to be liveable, our shelters that protects us from the environment, our infrastructure that feeds life.

As humanity moves on this journey in the 21st Century, it is my belief that architecture has become essentially a technology of our time. I call this Cybertecture, and as a technology, we have made architecture the device that may be liver the great future that mankind aspires to.

Cybertecture will be the building blocks to personal devices that monitor and binds individual lives. Cybertecture will be the building blocks to smarter shelters, buildings and spaces that binds our consciousness to the connect world in ever more intelligent ways. Cybertecture will the building blocks to great cities that needs to be more sustainable to feed and house the massively growing human population on our one planet. Cybertecture will be the building blocks to the infrastructure that bind districts, countries, continents together to transport people, resources, exchange information at light speed, fusing the planet as whole into one truly amalgamated community on a level never seen before.

Cybertecture will achieve these in new typologies of buildings that go beyond our notion of construction. New structures that are modular, flexible, transformable, self building and even transient will be the new architecture.

Cybertecture will achieve these in new typologies of interfaces between human beings and their spaces through sensory interactions driven by AI and connected via the internet.

Cybertecture will achieve these in new typologies of space time compression strategies that transcends our current notions of scale and time. Huge increases in speed of construction through robots, amazing high speed transportation like Hyperloop, and outer world settlements in orbit, on the Moon, on Mars and beyond will expand our notion of human civilisation.

We are living in interesting time, perhaps inside a new age Renaisance that is expressing our endeavour to overcome global challenges including climate change, poverty, famine, war and economic collapse.

Architecture can be the technology that alleviates the suffering of mankind. This is Cybertecture.”

My Drawing “Fabric of Hong Kong”
For the last 12 weeks, I as a Hong Konger have been living through one of the most tumultuous times of our community. Each night as I witness or watch the peaceful protests, not so peaceful events unfurling around us, I started to draw this drawing.....placing people one by one, in the tens, becoming the hundreds, the thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions. As I draw each person, I feel deference to each person that appears. I guess this is the fabric of Hong Kong as it is weaved by all of us. So I call this drawing “Fabric of Hong Kong”

Never take one's work too seriously...especially when you are commissioned to make a giant red and turqoise robot. Its great to remember to have fun, and to once in a while have the opportunity to stretch ones focus beyond what one is centric on. Every opportunity is an opportunity for each of us to appreciate something different. I certainly look forward to off shoots from my core works which gives me so much pleasure and satisfaction. Grateful. http://www.jameslawcybertecture.com/?section=projects&id=1097
