Terracotta black-top jar from the Predynastic Period of Ancient Egypt (3500–3200 BC)

Available now on Epsilon ArtShare, this 5000-year-old terracotta black-top jar measures 34.5 cm and is a wonderful example of Predynastic Egyptian pottery. The smooth shape of this jar makes it very elegant.

Pots like these were formed from either ‘Nile Silt’ or clay found in desert areas, with the vessels built up using coil construction. The distinctive black band at the top was achieved by putting the vessel upside down into a bonfire. The ashes would turn the top a rich black while the rest of the surface acquired a warm red tone.

Thangka of Vajrapani, 18th century China

Available now on Epsilon ArtShare, this 109.8 x 72.5 cm thangka was painted in China in the 18th century. It belongs to a set of nine paintings depicting the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (the ‘great sons of Buddha’).

This composition represents Vajrapani, who sits in a relaxed position on a decorative throne platform surrounded by an elaborate torana (gateway-like structure). The torana here is known as one of the Six Ornaments and follows a late Tibetan style popularized in the 17th century. Vajrapani grasps the stems of two flowers blossoming at his shoulders and wears lavish jewelry and heavenly, multicolored garments with different patterns.

Terracotta figure of a ‘Cypriot Goddess’, Cyprus, 1000 BC

Available now on Epsilon ArtShare, this 34 cm terracotta figurine originated in Cyprus in 1000 BC during the Late Bronze Age. The female figure is molded from beige-colored terracotta, with a smiling mouth, a flattened hat (probably representing a priestly cap), and a bowl in her hand. Named ‘Cypriot Goddess’, she wears numerous representations of jewelry. Similar figurines have been found in tombs of the Late Bronze Age and slightly earlier, suggesting that such sculptures had a funerary function. There are also suggestions that these figures are very early depictions of Aphrodite, with her mythological connection to Cyprus recorded in works by both Homer and Hesiod. This ancient molded figure comes with thermoluminescence testing.

Bronze, highly tinned Chalcidian helmet, 4th–5th century BC⁣

Available now on Epsilon ArtShare, this early example of a Chalcidian helmet dates to the 4th–5th century BC. A fascinating object with a strong presence, it’s a superb example of ancient Greek armor with ornamental detailing.⁣

With flexible hinged cheek pieces, the Chalcidian helmet design was an improvement on the more cumbersome Corinthian and Illyrian types. The open face offered improved vision and less weight, and curves around the ears maximized the soldier’s ability to hear. The helmet would have had an inner lining of leather, and adornments such as combs were often placed on top. ⁣
