//新舊相融:新加坡的文物保育與城市發展//

//Heritage Conservation in Singapore//

Singapore has come a long way since 30 years ago on its conservation journey with nearly 7,200 heritage buildings coming under protection as conserved buildings. Over the years, Singapore’s conservation and revitalisation methods have evolved to keep up with the fast-paced Lion City and its ever-shifting lifestyles. In planning for key historic areas, formulating guidelines, granting approvals for restoration and renovation works of conserved buildings, conducting conservation and heritage studies and more, we see inspiring innovation in Singapore’s heritage conservation approaches.

New World Group, UNESCO Bangkok and Culture for Tomorrow will co-present the Heritage Innovation Symposium 2023. With much honour have we invited Ms Tan Huey Jiun, Director (Conservation Planning) of Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Singapore, to join the conversation. Ms Tan will illustrate through case studies how Singapore strikes a balance between development and conservation, the opportunities in public-private partnerships, and how heritage buildings can remain relevant and provide value for the wider community in the long term. Ms Tan has over 20 years of experience in the URA, and has been involved in multiple Singaporean heritage architecture, urban design and conservation projects, extending their unique stories and significance for local communities.

//Integration of Culture and Sustainability of Jingdezhen//

Jingdezhen is deemed the “Porcelain Capital”, with 14 national kilns constructed between the 50s and early 90s as streamlined ceramics craft flourished. Tao Xi Chuan, for instance, was site of several such major factories. In the last decade, tremendous efforts have been made to preserve traditional porcelain workshops and modern industrial artifacts found in the city. The ceramic art industry was activated through the integration of "Jing Piao" (people who migrated to Jingdezhen) and local communities, and that of history and culture. Tao Xi Chuan Art Avenue, Jingdezhen Ceramic Industry Heritage Museum and other attraction zones and services have flourished around the core redevelopment planning in sustainable way, benefiting the whole community with functional structures and cultural patterns with elements of nature and industry.

New World Group, UNESCO Bangkok and Culture for Tomorrow will co-host the Heritage Innovation Symposium 2023. It is an honour to have Prof. Zhang Jie from the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University join our discussion and shed light on how the craft of traditional ceramics became an integral part of the city’s sustainable development progress. Having led a number of regeneration projects, such as Jingdezhen old town, the Fuzhou Three Alleys and Seven Lanes, Prof. Zhang’s distinct contribution in the field has been awarded with the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards of Distinction and New Design in Heritage Contexts, alongside other esteemed accolades.

//Alexandra Palace – Renewal and Arrested Decay//

Alexandra Palace, known as the “People’s Palace”, has enjoyed eminent cultural status in UK modern history. As a complex of buildings and public park space, the Palace brings together a wide range of cultural and community functions. It was also renowned as the birthplace of television, being the site of the first television broadcasts by the BBC from 1936. However, the east end of the building was under-used, and the theatre space in the east wing has been redundant for over 80 years.

Fortunately, the regeneration of the East Wing completed in 2020, under the “arrested decay” approach, has brought a new life to the site. Through careful repairs and refurbishments, the theatre retains the different layers of history, including decades of alteration, damage and slow decay on a material level. The theatre and the Palace at large, inscribed with history and character, have become the stage for contemporary art exhibitions, pop concerts and more public jubilance once more.

New World Group, UNESCO Bangkok and Culture for Tomorrow will co-present the Heritage Innovation Symposium 2023. It will have Geoff Rich, member of the Historic England’s Historic Places Panel and UK Design Council Expert, shares the conservation case of Alexandra Palace and explores how conservation can bring social values to heritage and culture conservation. With an architectural background and as the partner of FCB Studios, he has been professionally involved in the restoration planning in a number of regeneration projects, such as the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings and the Bath Abbey project.

//皇都歌舞「時間廊」 重現文化經典//

//Recreating Classic Moments At The State Theatre Time Gallery//

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the State Theatre, New World Development presents “DreamState”, an immersive theatre dinner soiree that recreates the glamour of vintage Hong Kong nightlife.

The Group invited Andrew Bull, the "Father of DJ in Hong Kong", to choreograph the immersive performance programme and lead a group of local and international performers to put together an all-encompassing performance by 65 iconic songs across various generations, taking the guests through fleeting ages and scenes—from the dance hall of Empire Theatre in the 50s through "Yè Shànghǎi" and "I Want Your Love”, to a classic east-meet-west nightclub in the 60s by “Kowloon Hong Kong” and “Twist & Shout”, then wrapping up the journey on the feverish disco dance floor in the70s and 80s. Under the nostalgic tunes of classic hits like “Give Me a Kiss” and “Laser”, guests will embark on a journey back in time through music, dance, drama and fashion.

//酒酣暢飲之夜 回「味」皇都舊日年華//

//A Taste Down Memory Lane//

New World Development organised the immersive theatre dinner soiree, “DreamState”, at the Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant yè shanghai K11 Musea. The sumptuous banquet invited former residents and cultural figures associated with the theatre, to recreate and reminiscence the old glamour of Hong Kong culture from 50s through 80s with music, dance, drama and gastronomy.

“DreamState” brings back the classic sugarcane and grilled dried squid snack stalls to the venue and let the aroma and taste evoke past memories. The dinner menu is specially curated by the culinary team of yè shanghai with reference to the 1950s nightclub menu items, pairing exquisite wine and cuisine with equally exceptional performances. Tony Wong, renowned dessert master from Hong Kong, also created a dessert in the shape of the parabolic exoskeleton truss of the State Theatre roof to pay a flavourful tribute to the one and only State Theatre.

//全新復刻標誌 傳承輝煌典範//

//The New Retro Logo of An Entertainment Legend Reborn//

A new logo for a fresh start. New World Development leveraged 70 years of cultural significance to reinvent the State Theatre logo. Revealed at the immersive theatre dinner soiree “DreamState”, the new retro logo signifies the rebirth of the State Theatre as a cultural landmark of our current generation.

The design of the new logo uses the theatre’s original emblem as the basis, and is heavily influenced by Theatre artefacts collected by the conservation team in the past two years, including historic movie tickets, movie programmes, and staff uniforms. Using a specially designed font, the retro logo imparts a contemporary design feel. The overall design also pays homage to the theatre’s iconic parabolic exoskeleton truss in the roof, and the liberal use of the classic burgundy and gold colours, borrowed from the Theatre’s iconic curtains, is a commitment to inherit the decorated legacy of the State Theatre.

Watch the video to catch a glimpse of the new logo and its story underneath.

//Piecing Memories Together: Recollection of the State Theatre//

New World Development is committed to restoring the State Theatre to its historical and architectural significance. While the conservation and development work is ongoing, over the past two years, New World Development's conservation team has been conducting historical research, collecting artefacts and recording oral histories, while painstakingly re-arranging the "cultural scores" of the State Theatre from the 1950s to the 1980s.

New World Development has invited the son and daughter of former State Theatre tenants to give a rare personal account of the State Theatre at its peak, and the socio-cultural landscape that allowed it to thrive back in the days.

//皇都歌舞「時間廊」 以聲、色、藝觸發時空旅程//

//A Sensational Throwback To Vintage Hong Kong//

To commemorate the glorious 70 years of the State Theatre, New World Development has planned the immersive theatre dinner soiree, titled “DreamState”, at K11 Musea Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant yè shanghai to reminisce about the vintage Hong Kong nightlife. Numerous iconic scenes, from the burgundy theatre curtain, to a 1950s movie programme, numerous old cinema tickets and photos, have been set to satisfy the guests’ curious appetite for the past and present of the State Theatre.

The menu of the soiree was specially curated by yè shanghai with the aid of the famous local dessert master, Tony Wong. Inspired by the shape of the parabolic exoskeleton truss of the State Theatre, Tony has created a dessert shaped after the architectural marvel to celebrate the occasion, so guests can explore the legacy of State Theatre with all senses. Local DJ legend Andrew Bull has also crafted a song-and-dance programme featuring performances by local and international artists, re-creating the classic tunes and dances of the good old times. A journey back to the glorious past, guided by music and energy, intertwined with fine guests, cuisine and wine to make for a night most unforgettable.
