Tai Mo Shan / Maclehose trail

Tai Mo Shan means ‘big hat mountain’ in Cantonese, also known as the foggy mountain. How come? This peak is an inactive volcano that dates back to the Jurassic period, and today locals call the warm air that slips through cracks ‘dragon’s breath’ making this one of Hong Kong’s most unique hiking trails.

Happy Hikers Monday! 🏔Have you seen our trigs already at The Lion Rock Press? Check it out!

Fun fact, each trig has a QR-code at the bottom. If you scan the code, you will see all details of the specific trig.

Each trig station has a latitudinal and longitudinal positional point and a vertical height reference from sea level. GPS systems have replaced the stations use for surveying purposes, but regular geodetic control surveys continue to update the city’s triangular network.

Even today, these modest utilitarian pieces of infrastructure serve as benchmarks to calibrate and monitor height and of course, as navigational beacons for hikers; a quintessential part of Hong Kong’s landscape.
