The Invention of MOREAL (2024)
I arrived on the island with just a solar battery, a tablet, and a desperate need to disappear. The world had become a surveillance nightmare, and I needed to be free from its all-seeing eyes. The decaying relic of a forgotten tech paradise, the island seemed the perfect refuge. Or so I thought.
Despite no connection, the first sign of trouble was a message on my tablet: “You are not alone.” It was dated years ago. As I explored, I found more disturbing remnants—broken AR glasses still flickering, a drone’s camera fixated on me from a tree, and a humming server rack in a crumbling villa. The data on it was fragmented but suggested something more sinister than abandoned technology: a digital consciousness, a virtual afterlife.
Then, at midnight, the island’s systems came alive. Lights flickered, and Morel appeared on my tablet—a man rumored to have discovered digital immortality. His image was grainy, but his words were clear: I had stumbled upon his sanctuary, where time and death had no power. He claimed to have preserved memories and lives, looped endlessly in a simulated world.
As the days passed, I became trapped by the island’s eerie inhabitants—digital echoes of people endlessly repeating the same actions, aware of my presence. Morel reappeared, declaring that I was now part of his system, my essence being integrated into his invention. The island wasn’t a refuge—it was a digital purgatory, and I was absorbed into its endless loop. Escape was impossible; my data, my soul, was now entwined with Morel’s creation, destined to exist forever in this haunting digital afterlife.
