GDF soldier injured after border patrol comes under fire along Cuyuni River
A member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was injured on Friday after a border security patrol escorting civilian commuters along the Cuyuni River in Region Seven reportedly came under hostile fire from the Venezuelan shore.
According to the GDF, the incident occurred at approximately 12:03 p.m. while troops were conducting a routine operation in accordance with established border security procedures.
The patrol responded in keeping with operational protocols and successfully ensured the safe passage of all civilians under its protection.
The injured soldier received immediate first aid at the scene before being medically evacuated to Georgetown for further treatment. The rank is reported to be in stable condition, and family members have been informed.
In a statement, the GDF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an active operational presence along Guyana's western border, emphasizing its responsibility to protect its personnel, safeguard border communities, and defend the nation's territorial integrity.
