We are honoured to announce the participation of David Gumbs, whose interdisciplinary practice brings digital media, creative coding, sound and Caribbean ecological knowledge into immersive, continuously transforming visual environments.

Commissioned for the Brooklyn Arts Council’s Sonic Clinic.

*Sonic Healing* brings digitally generated imagery, rhythm and sound together within an immersive audiovisual field. Created by Gumbs in dialogue with music by Trinidadian percussionist and composer Zane Rodulfo, the work draws upon Afro-Caribbean musical traditions and their histories of resistance, joy and collective liberation.

Organic forms pulse, expand and transform in response to the composition, translating sound into a constantly evolving visual environment. Image and music become inseparable, producing a space in which listening is also physical and visual.

Within *Breath in the Ashes*, the work introduces healing as a collective and embodied process. Sound carries cultural memory, connects bodies across distance and imagines renewal without denying the histories of rupture and damage from which it emerges.

We are honoured to announce the participation of Krasimira Butseva, whose practice examines political violence, traumatic memory and the silenced histories of communist Bulgaria through moving image, photography, sound and installation.

Balkan Mine emerges from Butseva’s research into Bulgaria’s communist-era forced-labour camps, particularly Belene and the Lovech camp known as “Sunny Beach,” which operated beside a stone quarry.

Through moving image, photography, sound and survivors’ testimonies, the work approaches the landscape as evidence: an apparently empty terrain that conceals histories of confinement, forced labour and political violence.

Within Breath in the Ashes, Balkan Mine reveals how extraction and repression become embedded in the ground itself. It brings into dialogue landscapes shaped by mining and forced labour, asking how institutional silence persists within territories long after the visible structures of violence have disappeared.

We are honoured to announce the participation of Ximena Garrido-Lecca, whose practice examines resource extraction, territorial transformation and the tensions between ancestral knowledge and colonial structures.

Filmed in Cerro de Pasco, Peru, Contornos follows the fences and barriers that divide mining operations from public space. The camera moves continuously along these boundaries, always remaining on the outside.

The voice of Alcibiades Cristóbal recalls the geology and disappearing cultural memory of the nearby Huayllay National Sanctuary, while the land and the histories held within it are physically removed.

Within Breath in the Ashes, the work considers the boundary as an instrument of extraction: a line that determines who may enter, who must remain outside and who has the authority to transform the earth. As the ground disappears, oral memory becomes a vital form of resistance against erasure.

We are honoured to announce the participation of Basim Magdy, an internationally acclaimed artist and filmmaker whose work combines poetic imagery, humour and the absurd to examine memory, failure and the uncertain promises of the future.

MY FATHER LOOKS FOR AN HONEST CITY

In an abandoned construction landscape, Magdy’s father walks with a flashlight, reenacting the ancient gesture of Diogenes, who searched through the streets in daylight for an honest person.

The solitary and seemingly futile search brings together the personal and the political. Surrounded by unfinished structures and fragments of unrealised progress, the father becomes a figure of persistence, moving through the remains of a future that never arrived.

Within Breath in the Ashes, the work asks what honesty might mean after promises of progress have collapsed. Can another future be imagined among the ruins, and can the act of searching itself become a form of hope?

We are honoured to announce the participation of Ursula Biemann, an internationally acclaimed artist, author and video essayist whose work examines ecology, climate and the politics of natural resources.

DEEP WEATHER

Moving between the tar-sands industry in Northern Canada and the flood-threatened delta of Bangladesh, *Deep Weather* reveals how extraction in one part of the world produces environmental consequences experienced by communities thousands of kilometres away.

The work exposes the unequal geography of the climate crisis: profit and destruction are separated, while vulnerable populations are compelled to adapt through collective physical labour. Images of thousands of people building protective mud embankments transform survival into a shared act of resistance.

Within *Breath in the Ashes*, *Deep Weather* reminds us that carbon does not remain where it is extracted. It travels through the atmosphere, alters water and weather, and connects distant territories within the same planetary crisis.

We are honoured to announce the participation of Harun Farocki, one of the most influential filmmakers and visual thinkers of the postwar period.

THE SILVER AND THE CROSS
2010 | Video, colour, sound | 17 min.

Through a close reading of Gaspar Miguel de Berrío’s 1758 painting of Cerro Rico and Potosí, Farocki reveals a colonial landscape shaped by silver extraction, forced labour and the accumulation of wealth.

Presented in Ptolemaida, a territory transformed by lignite mining, the work creates a powerful dialogue between different histories of extraction and their lasting impact on landscapes, bodies and collective memory.
