Cyprus Theatre Organisation – Thomas Moschopoulos

One of the most enigmatic works of ancient Greek dramaturgy, Ion teeters between the tragic and the comic, myth and realism, mysticism and scepticism, placing questions of identity and belonging at its centre.

The action unfolds within the sacred oracle of Apollo at Delphi, where the young Ion grows up nameless and unaware of his origins, struggling to piece together a sense of identity from fragments.

Directed by Thomas Moschopoulos, the production foregrounds the playful and ambiguous spirit of the work, transforming the stage into a multi-prismatic space of contemplation, where truth and falsehood overlap, reveal and conceal one another, while the question of identity remains open, fluid and agonising.

At a time when diplomacy falters, conflicts rage on without resolution, and leaders invoke oppressive laws to maintain power, Antigone feels more relevant than ever. Alan Lucien Øyen's production is an urgent meditation on conscience and human dignity in the face of law and violence.
On stage, Winter Guests perform alongside longtime artists from Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal, embodying a chorus of identities—what Øyen describes as "a woman in struggle."

Rooted in the legacy of Tanztheater, movement and speech carry equal weight. Through a deeply physical and emotionally charged stage language, memory, testimony and collective presence become the driving force of the performance.

First rehearsal photos from I-ONE at the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus!

Ivan Vyrypaev’s new play receives its world premiere under the direction of Galin Stoev. Drawing on both the form and spirit of ancient tragedy, I-ONE revisits the myth of Medea as a new tragedy for the twenty-first century, exploring the limits of technology, identity, and human consciousness.

Three actors from different countries—Antigone Duchesne (Australia), Sofia Kokkali (Greece), and Karolina Rzepa (Poland)—share the leading role, creating a compelling stage encounter between distinct artistic traditions.

The production is co-financed by the Polish Minister of Culture and the National Heritage Board through the Culture Promotion Fund.

Open Call | Athens Epidaurus Festival 2027 Artistic Programme

As part of its preparations for the 2027 artistic programme, the Athens Epidaurus Festival invites independent artists, artistic groups, cultural organisations, and arts institutions to submit proposals for new productions and artistic projects.

The Festival's Artistic Directorate is particularly interested in proposals grounded in artistic research and innovative approaches to conception, dramaturgy, stage language, aesthetic direction, and methodology. It also encourages collaborations and works that respond creatively to the defining questions of our time.

Applications must be submitted exclusively by completing the online application form available on the Festival website.
Submission period: 5 August – 15 September 2026 (18:00 EEST).
A separate announcement regarding Gen 260 will follow.

On August 7 & 8, Epidaurus welcomes two of this year's program highlights you won't want to miss!

At the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Alan Lucien Øyen presents a bold new interpretation of Antigone, marking his first appearance in Greece. Through a daring dialogue between dance and text, the winter guests company and acclaimed dancers from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch shed new light on the enduring questions of duty, dignity, and the conflict between law and justice.

At the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, Ivan Vyrypaev's new play “I-ONE”, directed by Galin Stoev, receives its world premiere. The leading role is shared by Antigone Dousen, Sofia Kokkali, and Karolina Zepa in a unique onstage encounter. Inspired by Medea, the production reimagines the legacy of ancient Greek tragedy, exploring guilt and memory through a contemporary lens for the 21st century.

How many things remain unspoken around us? In an age where information is omnipresent and noise incessant, certain silences – personal, social, political – linger heavily. The work leads us to the moment before speech, where absence becomes unbearable. Through light and sound, the dancers teeter between two silences: the one that protects and the one that oppresses.
