The Kiss by Christian Hook captures more than a simple embrace! The painting is alive with movement, blurred gestures, and layered brushstrokes that make the moment feel as though it is dissolving and reforming before your eyes. Hook’s signature style explores memory, intimacy, and the fleeting nature of human connection, turning a familiar act into something almost dreamlike.

You can find a print of this striking work in his room at the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery. 🎨

Elio Cruz, Painting 22
Acrylic on Canvas
90x90

This is one of the long series of paintings that Elio Cruz produced inspired by the Hastings coastline in England. It is a semi – abstract work like many in the series, taking in elements of the cliffs, rocky out crops and the sea. Elio’s love of the Rock is evident here as one could be fooled into thinking the artist is depicting the Rock of Gibraltar. It is a work that presents a dialogue of forms, as these are brought down to their essence by the artist, who also displays his love of sharp contrasts and vivid colouring.

Now part of Gibraltar’s living visual story 🎨✨

Aracena is one of five lunettes by Gustavo Bacarisas, created after he and his wife Elsa returned to Gibraltar to escape the Spanish Civil War. Each scene captures a historic town through sweeping views and carefully placed figures—art designed to blend architecture, place, and everyday life.

Four of the original lunettes now sit in Gibraltar’s Government Art Collection, with the fifth held by the Gibraltar National Museum. Since 2020, their figures have stepped beyond museum walls, reimagined as bold, Pop Art–inspired street murals across the city.

A quiet moment captured in pastel, “El Soco” by Jacobo Azagury, on display at the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery.

The title hints at its roots: “soco” meaning market in Arabic, and the figures’ attire echoing Mediterranean and North African traditions. Azagury spent time across the Strait, and this enigmatic scene feels like a blend of cultures shaped by that journey.

So… where do you think this scene is inspired by?

Afternoons in the Upper Town, now carried with you. 🎨🛍️

Featuring “Castle Ramp” by Leni Mifsud, this vibrant scene captures the climb off Castle Steps in a riot of colour—bold primaries, flashes of green and blue, and thick palette-knife textures that echo the peeling facades of the old town. Sunlight pours in from the west, casting long shadows and drawing the eye further up the steps, deeper into Gibraltar’s Upper Town.

Today we remember Mario Finlayson, who would have turned 99 🎂

In his later years, he never stopped experimenting, never stopped exploring. This reflective self-portrait captures an artist still searching, still questioning, still creating.

See it in person at the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery — a quiet reminder that curiosity can last a lifetime. 🎨

One of the jewels of the Government’s Art Collection, Ávila by Gustavo Bacarisas has a remarkable history. 💎

In the late 1920s, the monumental painting was taken to Madrid in 1933 and left behind when the Spanish Civil War broke out. Bacarisas believed it lost after his studio was bombed and destroyed by fire.

The work resurfaced in the late 1950s, damaged but intact. This is that painting.

Depicting a bird’s eye view of Ávila, the city of Saint Teresa, the work reflects Bacarisas’ Catholic faith and the influence of Monet’s large Giverny paintings, visible in its heavy impasto.

Recently restored, the canvas now stands once more in the National Gallery of Gibraltar 🇬🇮
