Driving along La Janda last weekend, hours before the announcement of a new lockdown, determined to bring home a few feathered memories; i carefully scanned the skies, land and water for bird activity. I came across a handful of easily recognisable birds, such as Stonechats, quite a number of Grey Herons, Egrets, Cormorants and loads of Goldfinches...struggling with many species, and big thanks to a few birders out there i was confirmed that the bird of prey showcased below is a Common Buzzard. A wonderful achievement (as although not rare) its a first for me...thinking it could have been a marsh harrier (confirming the need to reference my bird shots with my field guides and reference books getting dust in my library).

Shortly after diving and eating its catch..it paused and allowed me to photograph it...although not very colourful, the Northern Gannet is a creature which i find attractive to watch and document through my lens...its eyes, and general face features make it a photogenic piece to visit over and over. This bird was photographed in Little Bay, Gibraltar from the recently beautified promenade on a saturday winter morning with the Nikon D5 and Nikon 500mm pf5.6 lens with the help of a little sun

Right place right time; two for the click of one...Northern Gannets flying past me as i watched from the Rosia Bay promenade with the busy merchant ships in the background. I must have seen around 10 Northern Gannets, a couple Sandwich Terns, loads of Gulls, a Turnstone and a S**g ‘scuba diving’ not far from the shore that day; a few days before Christmas practicing with my Nikon D5

Reminded me of an arrow; the feathered torpedo diving for food. Another Northern Gannet added to my growing birds in flight portfolio. These large active seabirds are common throughout our winter months in Gibraltar. I tend to photograph them from Europa Point and along the Gibraltar Foreshore streching out to Little Bay and Camp Bay. This photo in particular was taken from the foreshore from the cliffside leading to Little Bay just before Christmas with my Nikon D5 and Nikon 500mm pf 5.6 lens

In the background, Tarifa...a stroll along the beach of Los Lances offers one the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of shorebirds, waders and sea birds. I was following this group of Cormorants for a while...able to photograph them as they stood still next to the estuary and later taking off and literally flying over me.

One of those shots I didn’t think much about when taken a few days ago. A bit of post work in lightroom and composition cropping in photoshop and voila, this came up 😁...a magnificent adult Northern Gannet flying towards me just off the coast of Gibraltar with the strait in the background, and a beautiful sunset in the making.

Not the clearest or sharpest of shots but I think its a nice capture of a S**g doing what it does best...catching fish. Here, whilst I was photographing Northern Gannets off Europa Point in Gibraltar i saw this S**g with its catch...i was around 50 or 60 metres away so couldn’t really tell what it had caught. I started photographing it and when zooming realised it had captured a venomous Black Scorpionfish, known locally as a rascacio (Scorpaena porcus).

A juvenile Northern Gannet flies past me just off Harding’s observation post in Europa Point Gibraltar where i spent a couple hours looking at the variety of sea birds in the area. My subject for the day were Gannets; this was the only juvenile i managed to photograph - a very interesting subject in my opinion, mainly due to its colouring which is quite different to the adult.

My first glimpse of Northern Lapwings from a trip to La Janda a couple weeks back...followed them in mid-air for a few seconds, firing away with my D5 camera and 500pf lens. Alas, the light was not in my favour and the beautiful colours of this bird do not shine through. Nevertheless, I take with me a nice record shot which shows these magnificent wintering birds flying together, a moment worth recording (and sharing).
