It's been a hot summer, hasn't it? It certainly has for those of us living in southern Europe. Of course, there are always people who will say, "It's summer—it's supposed to be hot." I tend to ignore those comments. Not because they're entirely wrong, but because they often become an excuse to dismiss the bigger picture. It was September 17, 2016, some three months after the Brexit referendum, that I last crossed the border into Spain. I had already made my decision before then not to bother crossing while the restrictions on Gibraltarians would be so great following Britain’s decision to leave the EU. However, a friend asked me to cover his wedding and, having said yes months earlier, I was never going to let him down purely because of my own personal views on politics....

Making “My Streets”

It all started to make sense as the design layout of this book took shape. All the anxieties about what order the images should go in soon dissipated. There was no need to provide an order. The moments captured during a period of some seven years had their own narrative as single captures. Mixed into a more global pot, they provided a wider narrative which, by themselves, flowed seamlessly, providing a semblance of Gibraltar's unique identity....

Seeing moments

There was a time back in the late 1980s and early 1990s when such a thing as a digital camera was somewhat a figment of people’s imagination. Then came the personal computer with its digital imaging software, the digital cameras and, of course, the debate. Oh God, do I remember the debate... all photography would be lost, people wouldn’t know how to take photos, nothing could replace darkroom work, blah blah....
