Did you know? These sculptures are more than art. They honor African ancestors who were lost to rivers, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean during the era of slavery.
Known as Nkyinkyim, an Adinkra symbol and proverb, the installation represents movement, survival, and the forced journeys our ancestors endured. Each face reflects a different tribe, region, and moment before capture.
Created by Ghanaian sculptor Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, the Ancestor Project reminds us of who we were, what was taken, and the possibility of reclaiming our greatness.
