As orders came over the telegraph line, troops began to muster in Accra to march north to Kumasi, while others in the Northern territories made ready to march south. Other troops in Sierra Leone to the west and Nigeria to the east began their march to the coast where ships were waiting to carry them to the Gold Coast."

Ɔtumfoɔ Kofi Kakari Golden Mask
Kofi Kakari became the Asantehene much to the displeasure of his predecessor Kwaku Dua I and he was really a strong man. The previous King had wanted his grandnephew to have rather succeeded him.

Santehene Kofi Kakari in the year 1867 was enstooled as the Asantehene and is believed to have sworn to be a fighter rather than a peacemaker who would negotiate for the Ashanti State. Truly, he abided by this statement and declared war on the Enemies of the Asante.
He planned to control the northern part of the then French togoland and by the year 1872 was able to expand Asante influence to many parts. The Asante General tasked to carry out the mission was the strong Gyaasehene Obuabasa Adu Buofour.

The British had wanted to protect the coastal states against the Asante because of our resilient Army and as such declared war on them. By the year 1873, Sir Garnet Wolseley the renowned General led his troops to the regional capital of Kumase.
Before that Santehene Kofi Kakari had sense danger approaching his doorsteps and hence sent a delegation to meet the British halfway to negotiate. An axe was carved to be given to the Queen Victoria as a present, all in a bid to avoid the war. However, the diplomacy failed and from 1873 – 1874, the war progressed until Asante lost.

In that invasion, the British looted Kumase & used dynamite to blow up the city before setting it on fire. They even looted & blew up the royal mausoleum in Bantama. Santehene Kofi Kakari didn't defend the nation but rather fled in disgrace & was later dethroned & exiled to a small village.

This victory encouraged the British to ransack the Asante Palace and the Golden mask which was carved for the King to wear during wartime was stolen together with other artifacts and us now on display in London Museum.
