BACKGROUND
Friends of UNHCR is a volunteer – based initiative by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Ghana aimed at engaging university students in promoting the refugee cause. PURPOSE
• There are over 100,000 refugees in the West African Region with over 14,000 of them residing in Ghana. Still, the majority of Ghana’s population lacks knowledge of Ghana’s r
efugee situation.
• By engaging the youth, we will be able to further the refugee cause and raise awareness of important political, cultural and socio-economic and human rights matters that affect the lives of refugees in Ghana.
• Youth participant will also be exposed to practical experience in humanitarian work and be able to build upon their CVs through their extracurricular involvement with Friends of UNHCR. GOAL
Friends of UNHCR Members will organize successful forums, classroom discussions, fundraising events or any other public events that raise the awareness of refugee issues and promote refugee protection. Friends of UNHCR also endeavor to inspire youth to cultivate cultural acceptance and understanding of refugees. By engaging tertiary-level students, UNHCR aims to better educate future young leaders – many of whom may go on to work in the media, government, or the private sector – sensitive to refugee issues
