IShowSpeed Joins Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to Produce Documentary on Ghana’s Historic Cameraman
Popular streamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., is stepping into film production with a powerful documentary celebrating Ghana’s history.
Titled The Eyes of Ghana, the documentary tells the story of Chris Hesse, the legendary Ghanaian cameraman who documented the life of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and other important moments in the country’s history.
Now battling failing eyesight, Hesse is on a mission to recover more than 1,000 hidden film reels from the 1950s and 1960s, which were reportedly stashed away following the 1966 coup that overthrew Nkrumah.
The project features IShowSpeed as a producer alongside Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Oscar-winning director Ben Proudfoot.
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the documentary is scheduled for a one-night theatrical screening in the United States and Canada on October 28, with additional screenings planned for Ghana and the United Kingdom.
The project is attracting attention not only for IShowSpeed’s growing influence beyond streaming but also for its mission to preserve an important chapter of Ghana’s history.
