The Annual Awubia Harvest Festival of our Awutu heritage has kicked off on a great note, and it promises to be the best one yet. It is going to be a week-long celebration of culture, heritage, tradition, entertainment and community, with the grand climax on 5th September 2026.

Neenyi Ghartey VII, Oma Odefe of the Effutu Traditional Council, and his delegation paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, H.E. Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, at her residence in Ottawa. The engagement brought together traditional leaders and elders of the Ottawa Mfantsiman Association for discussions focused on cultural pride, unity, and strengthening collaboration among Ghanaians in Canada.

A great call for the documentation, teaching, and learning of the Guan languages in our schools.
One honest truth is that everyone is making a conscious effort to ensure that their heritage is preserved, promoted, and passed down to the next generation. So why should we, as Guans, sit aloof and continue kowtowing to decades of historical distortions, marginalization, and the neglect of our own heritage?

It is time for us to take our languages, history, culture, and identity seriously and actively work towards preserving them for generations to come.

Nana Kwabena Boafo, Chief of Tutu-Akuapem, with his two wives, circa 1917.

Tutu is one of the historic towns of Akuapem, among the communities traditionally associated with the Benkum Division of Akuapem. Historical accounts place Tutu among the original Guan settlements of the area. Although the town has largely shifted from its indigenous Guan language, aspects of its indigenous heritage, including patrilineal traditions and cultural practices such as the celebration of Ohum, remain important to its identity today.

Traditional rice-picking ceremony at Jakpa Palace in Damongo, Savannah Region, Ghana.

The traditional rice-picking ceremony among the Gonja marks the opening of Damba, particularly Yagbon Damba. Beyond harvesting, it preserves historical memory, ancestral traditions, cultural identity and continuity. The rice is carefully cleaned, prepared into rice balls and shared among children as Zakat, accompanied by prayers for blessings, long life and another successful Damba. The ceremony also expresses thanksgiving and communal unity.

The Candle Vigil in honour of the late Paramount Chief of the Awutu Traditional Area, Nai Abokuade Agyeman Wyettey Otabil III, will be held today, Friday, 28th August 2026, at 7:00 p.m. prompt at Awutu Beraku in the Central Region of Ghana.
The vigil forms part of the events marking the ongoing Awubia Festival, as the people of Awutu come together to celebrate their heritage while honouring the memory and legacy of their late Paramount Chief.
