Magic and Melanin Access the Motherland

08/05/2026

some of the most meaningful parts of the residency happened in between the programming ✨

over birthday dinners, during late nights out, through laughter that made us stay a little longer, and conversations that deepened our perspectives 🫶🏾

community became part of our everyday rhythm here, and somewhere between all the ordinary moments, we found something lasting 🥹🌍♾️

continuing our MM Muse of the Week series ✨

this time, we’re in the Kara region of Togo 🇹🇬

where we visited the Koutammakou
and learned about an architecture that has shaped the landscape, provided refuge for the Batammariba people, and sustained generations.

too often, when people speak about “huts” on the African continent, it’s done in a way that overlooks what’s really there.

structures built in connection with the land and designed for climate, safety, and living.

as a reflection of culture, not a reduction of it.

and not far from there,
we went to the Djamde Elephant Reserve; home to the last two elephants in the country.

these two sites serve as a reminder of how much has changed and how much is still worth protecting.

the land, the architecture, and the life it holds.

this is one of our places where we go to rest sometimes. where we already know the food will be good and the vibe... even better

on any given week, you’ll find us here, breaking bread, laughing a little louder and staying a little longer
it’s also where we practice what we’ve been learning in Mina class. slowly, imperfectly, but together

because nothing says diaspora like finding each other over Ivorian food in Togo ✨

MM Muse of the Week ✨

this week, we took on the Kakum National Park Canopy Walk in Ghana 🇬🇭

a little nerve-wracking and a lot of movement but somewhere along the way, we found joy in it all.

in the steps, in the laughter, and in the moments we didn’t expect.

Ghana isn’t just Accra.

it is nature, adventure and experiences that push you… and hold you at the same time.

it’s one thing for the world to be recognize the transatlantic enslavement trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity, but as MM founder shared, the perpetrators (aka European colonizers) need to be held accountable and pay reparations. full stop.

at the same time, as Africans we must also be aware of the role tribalism played in facilitating the trade — if we want Africa and the diaspora to unite we cannot ignore that part of our history 🌍

this time we are exploring spirituality in Benin 🇧🇯

at the black river, we didn’t enter the water, we moved with it.
slowly, quietly.
letting the river set the pace.

somewhere between the stillness and the sound of the leaves, we were reminded that healing lives here.

in the land, in the roots, in what has been passed down.

not written but remembered

have you ever felt this kind of connection?

continuing our new series:
MM Muse of the Week ✨

this time, we’re at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, in Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭

visiting the memorial was more than a stop on the itinerary. it was a glimpse into the people of Ghana and the leaders who fought to shape the nation into what it is today.

it’s also a reminder of a vision rooted in unity; a belief that our liberation is tied to one another across borders and oceans.
from Marcus Garvey’s Black Star to Nkrumah’s Ghana to our residents standing there
this wasn’t just history
it felt like a return ✨

what does “return” mean to you?

we’re starting a new series:
MM’s Muse of the Week ✨

a space to highlight some of the moments from the Magic & Melanin Residency that stayed with us 🌍

we’re starting here: the Womé Waterfalls, in Kpalimé, Togo 🇹🇬

one thing our MM Residents learn quickly is that this experience goes far beyond the city.

it looks like long drives into the mountains, hikes that turn into hidden waterfalls, and days where time slows down enough for you to actually feel where you are 🦋

the waterfalls became a favorite for a reason. not just for the view, but for what they gave us: a place to soften, to laugh, to reconnect, to just be.

for many of us, it was one of those moments where you realize… this is what we came for 🌱
