NUNGUA KPLEJOO (HOMOWO) FESTIVAL 2026
Final (THIRD) DUDD MLI NU WOO Filling of the Traditional Pot with Sacred Water.

07/05/2026

Hello Goshers 👋🏾

The Nungua Festival Committee warmly invites you to come and document the 2026 Nungua Kplejoo (Homowo) Festival, especially the sacred Abele Womor rite on 24th May 2026.

Abele Womor is one of the most significant spiritual and cultural activities of the festival, where participants walk barefoot from Oyibi to Nungua to bring the sacred corn used for the Homowo celebration.

We would be honoured to have you capture and share this rich GaDangme tradition with the world.

Thanks 🙏🏾

FIRST/SECOND/THIRD NUNGUA DUDOR MLI NU WOO 2026
================================
'Dudomlinuwoo' (the filling of the ancient sacred pot with the sacred water), to wit filling the pot is a rite performed ahead of the Homowo festival of the Gadangme people. It is performed at Nungua by the Gborbu Wulomo Sh*tse -Overlord of the Gadangme State. To perform the rites, the Stool wife of the Gborbu Wulomo Sh*tse or a virgin is purified and dressed in white apparel with a piece of herb on the neck.
The Sh*tse places the pot on her head and she leads the people to a sacred place called Ye Ofe Shishi, to wit, under the Almighty. Spring water is fetched from the place and carried to the Gborbu Temple. The original place for the fetching of the water was the Obenesu, near Osu but population growth and dangers posed by moving vehicles have forced the journey to be shortened.
The water sent to the Gborbu groove is used for the rites throughout the year. It's the same water that is used to serve strangers who visit the Sh*tse throughout the year. There are however spiritual connotations to the exercise.
