African inventors are always spectacular

The boy in the image is Richard Turere, who grew up near Nairobi National Park where lions regularly attacked livestock, putting families’ livelihoods and wildlife conservation at risk.

At just nine years old, Richard realized lions weren’t afraid of light itself, but of moving light, which signaled that humans were awake and nearby.

Using scrap materials, LED bulbs, and a solar panel, he created “Lion Lights,” a low-cost system that flashes irregularly to keep lions away from cattle enclosures.

The invention dramatically reduced livestock losses and also prevented retaliatory killings of lions, helping protect a species with only about 2,000 left in Kenya at the time.

Today, Lion Lights are used across Africa and beyond, proving that powerful solutions can come from observation, creativity, and lived experience—not formal labs.
