After the Romans Call for Art

This year for Neath Art Festival we have chosen to celebrate the art of the Romans with the exhibition ‘After the Romans’.

The Roman Empire has had a great influence on art for centuries and they were well known for their painting, sculptures, architecture and of course mosaic work.
Wales itself has a rich history tied with the Romans.

Recently archaeologists discovered a Roman villa in Margam Park, Port Talbot, which is not too far from Queen Street Gallery here in Neath. It is believed to be the largest Roman villa found in Wales.

As well as this villa, there were many Roman forts in Wales, including one in the grounds of Cardiff Castle and there are many Roman roads in the region, notably Sarn Helen which links North and South Wales.

Inspired by this history and the art and design of the period, we are inviting artists to create artwork inspired by the Romans and this time period with successful applications being exhibited in Queen Street Gallery this October.

This is a very broad theme but we believe with the history of Romans in the area and in Britain overall it will be a great subject matter to work with. Let your imagination run wild!
