We were established in 1902, and are one of the longest-running Amateur Dramatic clubs around! SADC, one of the longest-established community drama groups in the country, stages three productions a year (March, June and November). We aim to cover the widest possible range of theatre: comedy and tragedy, classic and modern, light entertainment and challenging drama. While many of our productions include music, our range does not include standard musicals. We strive to mount productions of the highest standard with a wealth of talent and experience across all aspect of putting on a production: on stage, backstage, costume, technical, design, publicity, directing and producing. However, there is always room for newcomers, including those with little or no experience. What we ask for is enthusiasm and commitment and we will give you support to gain experience and learn the tricks of the trade. SADC currently has around 50 members of all ages and backgrounds. Although we do not claim to be a social club, in normal times we generally have several social events throughout the year, which are publicised in our regular members' newsletter, TABS. SADC is a very friendly group and all are very welcome to take part in our activities.

SADC Presents: Robert Preston as Gareth Janner in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Neighbourhood Watch'

Robert plays Gareth, an out of work engineer who keep his hands busy building various contraptions in his shed, amongst other activities .This is Robert's fifth play for SADC, with performances in over fifty other plays with various South London companies, including the now defunct Breakfast Cat Theatre Company, which he started in 2008, quite by accident, with a mime piece called Nightmare at the Shoe Museum, which saw Robert playing a scientist turned man-fly, foiling a pair of of shoe thieves' plot to steal Hitler's flip flops.

Neighbourhood Watch groups are nothing new, but to Robert, this feels a timely play to put on, when a quick look at local groups on social media sees men with questionable agendas and painted roundabouts as their profile pictures, declaring that they are setting up their own night patrols...

SADC Presents: Anne Gregory as Dorothy Doggett in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Neighbourhood Watch'

Anne joined SADC in 1999 and Neighbourhood Watch is her 19th production with the Club. She has also directed three SADC productions.
Favourite roles include Titania/Hippolyta open air at Polesden Lacey, a Wicked Queen at the Minack Theatre and in the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Paralympics. She is also a volunteer coach at the Diamond Riding Centre.
Anne is delighted to return to CryerArts after a ten year gap in one of Ayckbourn's darker comedies with an unexpected twist at the end. Think Martin McDonagh, but with character types that we have all encountered! Anne is greatly enjoying rehearsals with a terrific cast, director and crew, and isenjoying inhabiting a character that is nothing like her - hopefully!

SADC Presents: David Hedges as Rod Trusser in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Neighbourhood Watch'

David is having such fun playing Rod Trusser, an ex-army man. He is really enjoying extracting as much humour as possible out of Rod's ex-military approach to setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Although it's not all laughs - Rod is a deeply lonely man and he is looking for acceptance from his neighbours.
David is relishing working again with the director, Brian Aris, who makes rehearsals very enjoyable and is a real "actor's director", allowing the actors a great deal of input into their performance. It's lovely to work with such a great cast- some familiar faces and some talented newcomers to SADC. One of those newcomers is Debs, which makes this play the first time he has ever been on stage with his wife!

SADC Presents: Deborah Hedges as Hilda Massie in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Neighbourhood Watch'

Debs Hedges plays Hilda, the martinet older sister of our hapless hero, Martin. This is Debs's first performance for SADC, with most of her previous performances having been at Bromley Little Theatre and Beckenham Theatre Centre, over many more years than she is prepared to admit to.

Debs is coming to love and detest Hilda in equal measure, as she is likely to make the audience nod in recognition, smile wryly and roll their eyes, and gasp uncomfortably at her nasty manipulativeness. Overlooked as middle-aged, meek and dumpy, she is, in fact, a splendid suburban Machiavelli in the making. And she has right on her side, so don't cross her!'

SADC Presents: Michael Hall as Martin Massie in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Neighbourhood Watch'

This is Michael's second production with SADC, having played Claudius in Hamlet in 2019. Most of his dramatic efforts have been with CODA in Croydon, appearing in productions of Company, Pack Of Lies, Pride and Prejudice, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Abigail's Party and many more. He has also appeared at the Miller Centre, Putney Arts Theatre and directed several shows. When he is not acting, Michael is a pensions actuary.

Having previously directed Ayckbourn's Ten Times Table and performed in Confusions, Michael is looking forward to playing Martin, who so wants to do the right thing but gets so tempted as things go wrong....

This month's Let'sAct! Workshop is a read through of our March production, Colder Than Here by Laura Wade, to be Directed by David Hedges.

Colder Than Here is the debut play by the award-winning British playwright, Laura Wade. This life affirming play explores the impact of impending death on a family- Myra may be dying of cancer but she’s hardly going to let that dampen her spirit. Instead, she decides to face things head on, planning out her own end while trying to fix the relationships between her husband, Alec, and daughters, Harriet and
Jenna. As each family member struggles to cope with Myra’s illness, they find themselves drawn closer through moments of emotion, vulnerability, support and surprising humour.

Colder Than Here finds opportunities for joy and laughter – a testament to family, relationships
and finding light even in the darkest of times.

Join Sutton Amateur Dramatic Club for another Let's Act! acting workshop tomorrow, Wednesday 16th September CryerArts at 8pm. Come and join the fun of 'Making it Real'.

This month's session will be led by Dave Thompson and will focus on emotional realism using improvisation and scripted work to tackle emotional moments on stage. These will include moments of high tension and stress, such as bereavements and break ups as well as positive opposites- good news after a hospital stay or the beginning of an affair...

From Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams and Chekhov, we are all here for the drama, so join us on Wednesday 16th September for an opportunity to hone your acting skills and have some fun!

Martin and Hilda Massie live together, leading a quiet, Christian existence in the confines of the Bluebell Hill Development. Just as they are preparing for a housewarming gathering, their peace is shattered by a young trespasser in their garden. The Massies’ neighbours congregate in their living room and together they agree to form a neighbourhood watch group to safeguard against further incidents. After the Massies’ beloved garden gnome Monty is thrown through their window, matters swiftly escalate, complicated by Martin’s burgeoning romance with Amy, wife of Gareth, who was formerly involved with Luther, husband of Magda. What begins as a well-intentioned scheme for a safer community ends in anything but….

Audition Notice - Neighbourhood Watch by Alan Ayckbourn. Directed by Brian Aris.

Neighbourhood Watch follows a group of respectable residents who set up a local neighbourhood watch scheme in the belief that they are protecting their community. What begins as a polite, well-intentioned exercise in civic responsibility gradually becomes something far darker, as rules tighten, suspicions grow and moral certainty turns into control.
With characteristic wit and precision, Alan Ayckbourn explores how fear, conformity,
and the desire for order can erode compassion – revealing how ordinary people can justify extraordinary behaviour all in the name of “doing what’s right”.

Auditions for SADC's next production will take place on Tuesday 21st July at 8pm at St Mary's Church Centre, Beddington.

The play will be performed CryerArts on 24th - 27th November 2026.

Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8pm at St Mary's, from 8th September.

Please bring to the audition details of all known commitments for the rehearsal period.

Members and non-members very welcome- there is no charge to audition. We hope to see you there!
