The Holy Week Exhibition ‘Hidden Promise’ collaborative installation is now residing at the City of Wolverhampton College for its next stint.

The art piece invited students to write a promises on the stone that was significant to them, and had been spoken over them. They then wrapped the stone in linen, to be pilled together.

This piece reflects Jesus being the hidden promise of Easter, wrapped in linen and placed in a tomb behind a stone.

Students feedback included:

“I liked it, it made me think more about myself and what I want for myself”

“It makes me think about what you have and don’t have in life”

“I overthink a lot about small things, but this has made me think deep for a purpose”

“Sometimes it’s hard to put promises down in to words, so it’s nice to write it down, express and reflect”

What a fabulous penultimate day of performances at the Holy Week Exhibition yesterday.

We heard extracts from Handel’s Messiah performed by the amazing soprano Hannah Mary accompanied by John Wilderspin on the organ.

International artist Albert Shena performed The Circle followed by a Q&A.

Culminating with gospel singer Vie Watson performing The Cross Has The Final Say.

Today, Sunday 5th, is the final chance to experience the beautiful artworks St Peter's Church Wolverhampton if you haven’t seen it yet.

This event is aimed at families, however adults are welcome to come along too and participate. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The journey will comprise of a number of stations, where you can take part in reflective activities.

Complete the journey and each child will leave with an Easter prize.

The Cross Has The Final Say: A Sacred Sound Journey for Easter

A continuous, contemplative programme tracing the story of Christ from prophecy to resurrection through Classical sacred music, Negro spiritual, Gospel and contemporary hymn.

This offering unfolds as a living soundscape within the exhibition. Visitors are free to sit, stand, wander or remain in stillness — encountering the music at their own depth and pace.

The programme moves without spoken transitions, allowing the narrative to emerge organically through text, tone and silence.

Intention of the Offering
This 55-minute programme is shaped as a theological arc:
Prophecy → Devotion → Passion → Cross → Resurrection → Hope
Drawing on music from different eras and traditions — Latin sacred repertoire, art song, African American spiritual, Southern Gospel and Contemporary worship — the offering reflects the universal and enduring significance of Christ’s sacrifice.

The intention is:
To allow the church’s architecture to become an instrument • To invite contemplation rather than applause • To honour both the historic space and the visual artworks surrounding it • To create a shared yet personal encounter with the Easter story.
The repertoire spans centuries of sacred expression, acknowledging how the story of the Cross has been carried, sung, lamented and proclaimed across cultures and generations.

Messiah: A Reflective Easter Offering - Excerpts for Soprano & Organ

A contemplative offering of excerpts from Handel’s Messiah for soprano and organ, shared within the space of the exhibition. Visitors are welcome to sit and listen or to move freely, encountering the music as part of their journey through the artwork.

Enjoy a selection of excerpts from Handel’s Messiah in an intimate and reflective form for soprano and organ.

Rather than a formal concert, the music is shared as part of the surrounding exhibition space — an invitation to pause, listen, and reflect. Visitors are welcome to remain seated for the duration, or to move gently through the exhibition, encountering the music in their own way.

The programme weaves together well-known soprano arias with organ meditations drawn from the work, tracing a quiet journey through themes of hope, compassion and renewal.

At the centre of the offering is the relationship between voice, space and stillness — allowing the music to resonate within the architecture of the church and alongside the visual artworks on display.

Handel’s Messiah is one of the most well-loved works in the classical repertoire, telling the story of Christ through music — from prophecy and birth to suffering, resurrection and hope.

In this setting, heard in excerpts for soprano and organ, the music takes on a more personal and contemplative quality — allowing listeners to encounter it gently, within the space, and in their own time.
