WEM ART SOCIETY

This afternoon’s demonstration/introduction to the mysteries of watercolour painting by Rosemary was a work of art itself. As we know, she is an accomplished artist but this afternoon confessed to being self taught.

Although, many members are excellent artists, they also joined in with the newbies like myself, as even with experience none of us are too old to learn new tricks.

We were taken on a journey about the various papers and their uses as the weight, content and texture can make the difference to the appearance and quality of the finished work
of art.

She then gave an insight into what various brushes are used for; even if round or flat can be used to make shapes by twists or turns while using. This is of course some of the tricks of the trade that one can practice and play around with. To a degree that is what watercolour art is all about - practice and experiment.

At this point I will just say a massive thank you to Rosemary for her effort in making this afternoon an informative and enjoyable couple of hours.

There are a few examples of our work today. As you will see there is a long way to go - but it is fun

WEM ART SOCIETY
It was another busy and enjoyable afternoon on Tuesday as usual. Members getting their pictures ready for submission for the 2027 calendar.
YES it will be back for next year as loyal subscribers have dictated. It has been an effort to keep the price affordable with the present hiccup with the economy. So fingers crossed we have got it right.
Next Tuesday (19th May) we have a workshop to be presented by Rosemary, one of our most respected artists. She will give a
hands on start for beginners with watercolour- starting from the very beginning with suggested “tools of the trade” which includes paper, brushes, and paint etc. to the first stages of actually putting paint to paper.
Although this is aimed at beginners I am sure members that have already made a start with this genre will have their eyes opened – I include myself in that remark and am looking forward to the demonstration with excitement as I am a fan of Rosemarys’ work and I know she has a wealth of experience and talent to pass on.
As I know there are one or two people out there that are not sure about joining our society this is the type of enjoyable session that occurs from time to time.

WEM ART SOCIETY

After a quiet couple of weeks this week saw a near full compliment of artists settling down to their usual couple of hours enjoyment, getting their works of art ready for the usual exhibition in October and also their submissions ready for the annual calendar.
It seems that the recent few spells of sunshine has injected a new lease of life to everyone after the dreadful winter of rain and wind.
We have 3 new members recently who seem to be settling in
quite well and joining in the general chit chat and showing good talent in their respective genres.

This week we saw some of the pencil drawings that have been done from the challenge put out at the workshop held 3 weeks ago. It was for members to do a sketch every day for a week of any subject at home and spend only a max of 5 minutes to complete. I have posted a few of them. I think this will continue as the idea has been well accepted by members.

The rest of this term has two or three workshops arranged these will be as I understand it on basics and improvement of watercolour and acrylic. More info next week.

It has been a while since I last posted Wem art society news but as you are no doubt aware it was because we were closed for what turned out to be a beautiful Easter which I hope you all enjoyed.
We will of course be back in business at the Wem Senior Club room
in Chapel St Wem SY4 5ER next tuesday from !.30pm until 4pm. Where we will be very pleased to see one or two newbie or competent artists come and help fill the spare table we have. If you haven't set up for drawing or painting we can help you decide on a genre that suits you and offer advice on whatever you choose.
I can assure you that doing art in a group or club situation is the
most enjoyable experience and you will be surprised at how well you can do. We also have good tea and biscuits.
Why not look on the "all pictures" on this site and see what you can
achieve as a learner or help our learners if you are experienced.

Wem Art Society

It seems barely any time that we started the New Year session and here we are, might I say on a beautiful sunny day
Only one week to our last session before Easter.
To be clear next Tuesday 24th March is the last day and we return on Tuesday 14th April and as usual we are at:-

I know there are one or two artists out there who have not yet decided if it is for them, but I can assure anyone that is interested we are a very happy group and for a beginner avery good place to start. There is only one way to find out.
Come along next Tuesday at 1.30 pm and meet the artists.

WEM ART SOCIETY

We are just starting our last month of the first term this year and it has been a refreshing change, with the first of a trilogy of “Share a Skill.” This week saw Susan, a long standing member who is a very talented “sketcher” volunteering to
set the seeds of what is probably not such an attractive
side to art being less colourful than other genres

One could say “I did that at school” but why not give it another try. It isn’t easy but why not give it a go.
Susan started off with a “Quick Sketch” showing what one can achieve in a few minutes. It was done whilst having coffee in a well known coffee house.

I am not sure it is going to break down barriers in the amateur art world but the benefit is a relaxing way to practice
ones artistic ability and in doing so, practice composition an
important part of any genre. Most of us amateurs paint from photos, or illustrated books, so to sketch then paint at home is an ideal way to achieve a “plein air” masterpiece without sitting for hours in what might not be the best of weather.

WEM ART SOCIETY

The Wem artists are back in full force after the winter break.
What a non- stop amount of wind and rain we are having? But what better time to sit down with a warming cuppa or glass of favourite tipple and brushes, pastels or pencil. Let the creative juices flow and forget about the weather.
Our Tuesday afternoon meetings, have the added dimension of not just art, but a very sociable couple of hours.
The images are a mixture from newer and older members in a variety of mediums of watercolour, pastels and
coloured pencil.

I have particularly posted this update to address several questions I have been asked as to whether we are suitable for
beginners. Although we do not “teach” art, as long as one knows the type of medium that attracts them to it, just by seeing members working and asking questions, it becomes a
self taught hobby and once the basics are learnt it wouldn’t be long before (with the encouragement from others) the
end product will appear.

I hope I have come some way to encouraging interested persons to come and join Wem Art Society.

WEM ART SOCIETY

The WAS Annual General Meeting held yesterday was a most enjoyable social event as it started with a sharing lunch which
was so well provided by the members: not only are there
enthusiastic artists but very fine cake and biscuit makers.
After we had filled the inner self with this fine cold buffet it
was time to get down to business which, because there was an
excellent turnout of members, we had plenty of ideas and discussion
which will keep the society on it’s already successful track.
It is now all eyes down to the paint pots and pencils to create the
usual offering of work for the annual exhibition in October.

As usual I would like to try and encourage any potential new members to come along and give art a try, or if you are already painting or drawing come along for new ideas. as a recent new
member myself I think I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Another gentle reminder to members:-

This Tuesday 27th January is our AGM where the members can join in with any suggestions and/or
Ideas for inclusions of interest in the annual programme.
As we will be having a sharing lunch this will start
at 12.30pm which will give more time for the meeting
and finish at our normal time of 4pm.

Good Evening WAS watchers and members, a very Happy and Healthy New Year to all.
A first reminder that we are back to "Normal" at Wem Senior Club, Chapel St. on Tuesday 13th January 2026.
If you are thinking of joining us, and were lucky enough to have found a paintbox and brushes in your stocking on Christmas morning do please come along at 1:30pm on the 13th and make 2026 the year you learned or maybe improved your art you will be guaranteed a warm welcome.
