Saturday’s show ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ at the Backyard Theatre introduced the audience to the rigorous training an S.O.E had to complete to qualify as an overseas spy. The skills she had to acquire and the knowledge that work in dangerous territory would be terrifyingly isolating, with a very low chance of survival, were highlighted throughout the performance. Louise Jordan’s beautiful original songs were interspersed with scenes exploring the challenge of landing in occupied territory, the uncertainty of intermittent communication from command, and the unsettling reality that objectives could change once the mission was under way. The question running through the performance was stark: why would anyone volunteer for such high-risk work? The answer was equally direct: ‘If not you, then who?’

In the second half, we were brought up to date through a hard-hitting song about those who did not survive and those who were executed, reminding the audience that the bravery explored on stage was not abstract history, but a human cost paid by real people. A terrific addition to a terrific Watchet 1940’s weekend

Last Saturday, Riddlestick’s rich tapestry of productions brought an edgy beautifully portrayed drama to Watchet’s Backyard Theatre. Set against the backdrop of the Great War ‘Song of the Crow’ explored the desperation of many who suffering loss, used mediumship in an attempt to contact their loved ones. Melodies and harmonies accompanied by ‘cello, guitar and accordion made this an original, hauntingly absorbing play given through terrific performances. Audience members remarked:

Dame Heccatty and The Instruments of Darkness at the BYT

Wow what a terrific Show ! With a script from Martin Riley, just a ‘little’ help from a willing audience, and atmospheric accompaniment provided by the ‘Mavron String Quartet’, the masterful steering of this entire interactive production by actress Helen Woods -aka Heccatty the Chief Witch – ‘held’ the audience entirely throughout this hilarious re-telling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Adults and children took equal delight in the show. With one of the audience commenting it was ‘One of the best things she had seen on stage for a long time’
