The Diary of Small Hurts
Six-year-old Ethan stopped laughing the day his parents divorced.
Before that, their small suburban home used to echo with toy car crashes, bedtime giggles, and Sunday pancake mornings. But after the divorce, silence moved in like an unwanted guest. His father left with two suitcases, and Ethan stayed behind with his mother, Lena, in a quieter apartment across town.
Ethan didn’t cry much.
That was what worried Lena the most.
He became calm… too calm for a child his age. He spoke softly, followed rules, and rarely asked questions. Teachers said he was “mature.” Neighbors called him “well-behaved.”
But Lena knew something inside him had changed.
One afternoon while cleaning storage boxes, Ethan found his mother’s old film camera — a dusty silver one she hadn’t used in years.
“Can I keep this?” he asked gently.
Lena smiled faintly.
“Of course, sweetheart.”
From that day on, Ethan carried the camera everywhere.
At first, Lena thought he was photographing trees, birds, or toys like kids usually do.
He wasn’t.
Small Hurts
One evening, Ethan stepped on a tiny nail in the backyard.
Lena rushed toward him.
“Oh my God, Ethan! Are you okay?”
He nodded calmly, holding back tears.
Instead of crying, he limped inside, picked up the camera, and clicked a photo of his small wounded foot.

Later, he printed the picture using the old printer and quietly went to his room.
The same thing happened again.
A scratched knee from falling off his bike.

A tiny cut from paper at school.

A bruise from bumping into a table.

Every time he got hurt, he photographed it.
No complaints. No tantrums. Just silence… and a camera shutter.
The Diary
One afternoon, Ethan left for a birthday party at a friend’s house.
While cleaning his room, Lena noticed a thick blue diary hidden beneath his pillow. Photos peeked out from its pages.
She hesitated.
Then slowly opened it.
Inside were dozens of printed pictures — tiny wounds, scratches, bruises, and bandaged fingers.
Under every photo was Ethan’s careful handwriting.
“Dear Dad, I got hurt today but I didn’t cry.”
She turned the page.
“Dad, Mom says I’m brave now.”
Another page.
“When I meet you, I will show you all the times I was strong.”
Her hands began to tremble.
Page after page revealed the same thing — a child documenting pain not for sympathy… but for approval.
Then she reached the last page.
A photo of Ethan smiling weakly with a small scratch on his cheek.
Underneath, written in uneven letters:
“I think if Dad sees I’m strong, he will come back home again.”
Lena’s vision blurred.
The diary slipped from her hands as tears poured uncontrollably.
Her six-year-old son had been collecting his pain… trying to prove he was strong enough to bring his family back together.
She sank to the floor and cried harder than she had the day the divorce papers were signed.
The Decision
That night, Lena couldn’t sleep.
She reread every page.
Every photo felt like a quiet cry Ethan never allowed himself to make.
She realized something heartbreaking — their divorce hadn’t just separated two adults.
It had stolen a child’s innocence.
At dawn, she made a decision.
The Knock
Later that evening, Ethan held his mother’s hand as they stood in front of a familiar house — his father’s home.
Lena carried a large handwritten sign.
Her hands shook as she knocked.
The door opened.
Daniel, Ethan’s father, froze in shock.
Ethan looked up, eyes shining.
“Hi, Dad.”
Before Daniel could speak, Lena lifted the sign. Written across it were simple words:
“I’m sorry. Can we try again — for him, for us?”
Silence filled the porch.
Then Ethan pulled out his diary and held it toward his father.
“I saved these for you.”
Daniel flipped through the pages.
His face broke.
Tears fell freely as he knelt and hugged his son tightly.
“I never wanted you to be strong alone,” he whispered.
Lena began crying too.
Years of pride, anger, and misunderstanding melted in that single moment.
