Beginners attend a beginners course th

at enables them to work independently. The tutors are:

Debbie Bent, the founder, who is very experienced both as a tutor and technician having tutored in various institutions from the University of Herts and Oaklands College to Courtyard Arts and who founded Digswell Ceramics Community before Made with Clay Studio. Zara Benomran who started as a trainee technician with Debbie and who has since graduated to having her own classes. Alice Sparkes a maker who sells under Little Shop of Pots who has been teaching with the studio for over a year. We also have three working apprentices, Alma Sheren, Taja Costigan and Reena Lennon and a volunteer team who manages our swaps with Emma Van der Veen as the co ordinator. We are a community. We help each other and support each other. The Ceramic facility is not for profit so we all take some responsibility for it's running. Members are taught to work independently but everyone's journey is different and our approach is geared to your needs. We are artists. We know how to nurture everyone's individual creativity and the atmosphere is positive, calm, encouraging and creative.

Students are offered the chance to donate their Christmas week fees towards workshops for their local community. As well as Garden City Housing in a monthly basis, this month we also worked with Herts Vision Loss who support people who are blind or have partial sight.

They were really receptive and open with great listening skills.

We had to use touch, showing techniques on their hands to enable the participants to feel how hard to press and what movement to use in order to change the shape of a pot.

They made several wonderful little pots using Terracotta clay, which is a messy but tactile clay to work with.

Those of us who are sighted did do a visual check to make sure no one wandered off with random clay stripes on their faces or fingernails with a layer of clay underneath.

We got to make a new doggy friend too. 🐾

Cant wait to give them their pots back 🏺 so that they can feel the difference.

There is something poetic and grounding about working with black clay🌑. It is raw, unapologetic, and tells a story unlike any other medium.

From the first touch to the final firing, it has been incredible to watch these pieces come to life with such depth and emotion. 🐦‍⬛

My train journey to work this morning reminded me of the students currently using frosted jade. It is such a beautiful dark winter green.🪴

I am looking forward to seeing when the lovely spring hues will arrive. 🌿✨.

We had a new student learning the ropes today! I love showing the art of the wheel to newcomers and seeing that “aha!” moment when it all starts to click.

Hours of quiet contemplative burnishing and careful wrapping with organic materials begin this work. It is then given over to the flames of the sawdust firing to complete. The results are unique to each piece. They are then collected from the ashes, cleaned and polished with wax.
