Did a YouTube creator just beat Hollywood at its own game?

Backrooms has gone from viral internet horror to a genuine box office success, drawing audiences across the US and UK and proving that creator-led filmmaking is no longer just an online phenomenon.

What makes this story so fascinating is that it wasn't built by a major studio first t was envision by a teen and built by the internet. Now cinemas worldwide are cashing in on a fanbase that already existed.

Could this be the start of a new wave of YouTube creators becoming Hollywood's next blockbuster directors?

And for those who've seen it... did Backrooms live up to the hype? 👀🍿

Despite last night’s tube strikes, our film screening and FILMTalk in collaboration with Castlehaven Community Cinema of The Great Beauty at Clarence Hall, London Camden welcomed a small but passionate audience for an evening of cinema, conversation and reflection on Paolo Sorrentino’s modern masterpiece.

Went to Cineworld O2 last night to catch Backrooms and this was one of the most unique cinema experiences I've had this year.

The film does a great job of expanding a concept of being lost and isolated within a confined space. The story is simple, following Clark,.mamager of a furniture store and Dr. Mary Kline,.his therapist as they become drawn into the mystery of the Backrooms. It's the mystery itself that keeps you intrigued.

The pacing is steady, rather than relying on constant jump scares, it builds tension through atmosphere, uncertainty and isolation. There were moments where nothing was happening, literally yet the entire audience felt on edge waiting for something to emerge from those endless corridors and dark rooms.

The found footage elements were a real highlight. Combined with the distorted audio and documentary-style sequences, everything felt immersive rather than a gimmick.

Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark and Renate Reinsve as Dr. Mary Kline were good, they make the increasingly surreal events feel believable and the therapy scene when they do a roll play is a standout.

The cinematography is on point, captures the loneliness and scale of the Backrooms perfectly, while the visual effects create environments that feel dreamlike and uncomfortable.

Overall, a creepy, immersive and visually impressive horror that understands exactly why people became fascinated with the Backrooms in the first place. If you enjoy atmospheric horror, found footage or psychological thriller this is absolutely worth watching on the big screen.

Went to 👀 Passenger last night at Cineworld O2 and despite some obvious genre clichés and story predictably, this was a good solid early night horror watch.

A demonic presence stalking travellers on the road sounded on paper, standard but the whole highway folklore added to the intrigue. The film builds a genuinely eerie atmosphere with some good jump scares and effective use of special effects.

Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell were both really engaging leads too. Their chemistry works well on screen, keeps you rooting for their survival even when things get darker and more supernatural.

I liked how the film leaned into old folklore and symbolism especially the references to Saint Christopher, the protector of travellers. It gave the story a more depth beyond just jump scares.

The visuals were nice and the cinematography is crisp. There's lots of isolated highways, dim lighting, empty roadside locations… it made everything feel tense and claustrophobic even in well lit, open spaces. Some of the night driving sequences were genuinely creepy and at times uncomfortable.

The film sits somewhere between supernatural horror and road-trip thriller, with shades of Creep and the recent Shelby Oaks.

Overall, an entertaining film with gripping suspense and high tension. If you enjoy horror with mythology, creepy imagery and supernatural suspense, this one’s worth watching on the big screen 🎬

IMAX could reportedly be exploring a potential sale, it’s one of the biggest cinema industry conversations right now.

Wall Street speculation suggests the premium cinema giant is looking at strategic options, including a possible sale, as studios and exhibitors continue adapting to the modern theatrical landscape.

But this feels bigger than business headlines.
For so many film fans, IMAX has become the fo to, the way to experience modern blockbuster films — from Oppenheimer and Dune to F1 and Avatar. It’s one of the few premium formats that still makes audiences feel like cinema is an event.

And if ownership changes hands… what could that mean for the future of premium cinema experiences? 👀

🍿 Would movies feel the same without IMAX?

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival has officially wrapped and once again, it’s already shaping the films everyone will be talking about this year.

Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord took home the Palme d’Or, instantly becoming one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. But beyond the winner, Cannes delivered what it always does best: surprise breakout films, major buzz and future awards season contenders.

Film ttles like Paper Tiger, Parallel Tales, The Unknown, Minotaur and Hope left critics and audiences talking long after the screenings ended. But one of the biggest surprise stories has to be Club Kid. Before Cannes, it had almost no hype — now, after strong reactions and a bidding war, it’s been picked up by A24 and is already being tipped as a potential awards season contender.

Why Cannes film festival still matters? In a film landscape dominated by sequels and franchises, Cannes remains one of the few places where original, independent cinema can genuinely break through globally. It’s where future classics are discovered and where smaller films can suddenly become worldwide cultural moments overnight.

So… which Cannes 2026 film are you most excited to watch? 🎬👀
