Sometimes you just gotta know when to stop and I’ve been faffing about with this portrait long enough. So here it is finally finished in all it’s grungy roughness glory!!

Tried some new techniques and mediums with this piece, some worked and some need refining but overall it worked out pretty well.

Finally gotten round to posting this commission and to say it was tricky would be an understatement. Merging 3 individual images into one portrait is not an easy task, but I’m really pleased with how the finished and framed piece looked: Son and parents in one frame!! and now on to the next one!!

So I’ve waited a while to post this portrait as this was commissioned by a lovely lady as a gift for her friends 60th birthday. A unique portrait of her pets Max and Alfie. It was great to receive some feedback and to be told that I captured the likeness and emotion of both dogs and this really is a gift to treasure and a portrait I loved drawing!

I’ve been working hard on commissions recently and not had much time to do any other drawing, but I’ve found a bit of time to do this portrait of Ian Brown complete with a homage to The Stone Roses album cover with a paint splatter effect background. Flicking paint on a drawing thats taken hours to complete is one of those moments when you can potentially ruin a drawing but you hope for the best, I think it came out all right!! I’m still debating whether it needs a lemon tho!!! Feel free to like, comment and share folks!!

My 10th World Cup winning captain and the 2nd from Brazil is Mauro Ramos, who lifted the World Cup for Brazil for the 2nd time in Chile in 1962 playing against Czechoslovakia. Mauro Ramos is widely regarded as one of the best Brazilian centre backs and sweepers in the history of the game, he was praised throughout his career for his aerial ability and tackling.

Latest commission all done and delivered, glad you like it !! This portrait of Tyson Fury has been painstaking over the last few weeks, with many a late night. This has been drawn with a mix of charcoal, polychromos coloured pencils and a touch of gold leaf. Some artistic licence was needed to create the image I wanted and It’s took a while but has been well worth the time and effort.

Having watched The Great Songwriters interview with Richard Ashcroft on Sky Arts the other week, I took some inspiration from the former Verve frontman and completed this portrait late last night. Titled ‘Catching The Butterfly’ from the song on the incredible Urban Hymns album of the 90’s.

My ninth World Cup winning captain and the first from Brazil is Hilderaldo Bellini, who lifted the first of Brazil’s World Cups in Sweden in 1958. Bellini was a defender and is regarded in Brazil as one of the nation's most solid central defenders ever. He is widely credited with starting the tradition of lifting the World Cup trophy into the air at the presentation ceremony and following this gesture it has since become associated with victory, and the rest they say is history.

It was nice to do something a little different last week customising a pair of football boots in a Venom and Carnage design, who said Art needs to be confined to paper or canvas?

Growing up a Man Utd fan in 90’s Manchester there was only one footballer you wanted to be and that was Eric Cantona. I remember turning up on a Sunday morning as a kid ready for a match, and every other kid had his collar turned up. I don’t think any other player has had the same impact on a club as Eric did for Utd, he just pushed the boundaries in more ways than one, and still to this day his name rings out around Old Trafford. Also, on this day in 1996 he scored that goal against Sunderland, the skill, the audacity and of course the celebration, quite a fitting day to finish this portrait.

Had a great morning in Lytham if a little cold, wet and windy and unfortunately no walk down the sea front but had a top full English breakfast so all’s good. Anyway, I delivered my new portrait commission of with the famous stare that could kill from the movie and I even managed to watch the classic movie as well. Louise Roper glad you like your new portrait!!

Completed last night this is my new portrait of Johnny Rotten lead singer of the S*x Pistols, bulging eyes and bright hair, now you can Love them or loath them but in their fairly brief early career the S*x Pistols are regarded as one of the most groundbreaking acts in the history of music and one that were responsible for initiating the punk movement in the uk and their album is regarded as one of the all-time great albums.

This is definitely one for the man cave, I just need a man cave to hang it up in now!! There is something in this mugshot of Pablo Escobar in 1977, the smirk and smugness of a man who even though he had been arrested knew he was in complete control. He went on to become probably the biggest, wealthiest and most feared criminals in the world, but he eventually paid the ultimate price for not being very nice.

So this little chap found a new home today. Loved drawing this little fella who meant the world to and . Lots of new techniques used and of course the dreaded colour!! All worked out perfectly though in the end and I couldn’t wait till Christmas to pass this on so it was delivered today just a little early 🙈

As many of you know I don’t paint, mainly because I’m colourblind and find mixing colours a little tricky, so I tend to stick to my trusty pencil and charcoal.
-
However, my daughter has asked me on numerous occasions to paint her portrait, but I’ve always put it off, so what’s a Dad to do? Well, over the last few weeks I’ve given it a go, ignoring any supposed rules of colour and this is what I came up with.
-
All in all I’m pretty pleased with my first ever attempt at a painted portrait and Erin loves it so I suppose that’s all that matters. The painting may not be perfect but she certainly is.

Another winning captain completed and this was probably the hardest of all, I’ll be glad when I get to a time when photographs improve as the reference photos of these early World Cups make these tricky to draw. This time it was the turn of who was the captain at the 1954 World Cup beating Hungary in the final 3-2. Playing his entire club one club career with he is highly regarded with the stadium named in his honour.

So I think this Highland Cow drawing will be the last one of these I do for a while as it’s time to focus on something new. The gold worked well with the charcoal and this maybe something to use on new projects in the future but we shall see.

My new project will see me picking up the paintbrush for the first time and trying my hand at painting, which should be fun as I’m colourblind so this could go either way, wish me luck 😂

So, I’ve had to wait a little while before posting this recent commission so not to spoil the surprise gift for his first birthday. I loved drawing this little chap in his team colours and my experiment with some new mediums worked out perfectly for the colour section, so overall I’m well pleased with this. Now on to the next one.

Quite possibly the most feared animal on earth, with no known natural predators (with the exception of humans), what an amazing animal. The sharks Jaws depict everything that is feared and it’s razor sharp teeth are it’s ultimate power symbol, yet they are another example of humanity endangering what they don’t understand.

So pleased this morning with the news that 2 of my art works have sold in the recent ‘resolution’ exhibition.
-
This was my first time exhibiting with the gallery so I had no expectations with regards to selling works and I was just happy to have been selected to participate, but to receive such positive feedback and with the added bonus of selling two pieces was just great.
-
Thanks to whoever bought my works I hope they look fab in there new homes and to for your support hopefully I will be back soon with some new works 👍🏻

With a little time on my hands I thought I’d get back to drawing another winning captain. This time it’s the turn of who was the captain at the 1950 World Cup beating Brazil in the final. Regarded as one of the greatest classic holding midfielders, Varela was adept in defence and renowned for his tenacity and leadership. He is regarded as one of the greatest captains in football history.

This was another tricky one that I have been putting off for a while. The reference images are not the best so a little improvisation was needed.
