The Weight of Freedom

Living the dream on a tropical island, I find myself sitting with very real life questions:
Where do want to live?
Where do I belong?
How do I create a life that is both free and sustainable?

Years ago, when I was working a 9–5 office job in London, commuting every day, I thought freedom was the answer.
I thought: one day I’ll be free and life will feel more like mine.

I left that life in 2018 and became “free”.
Since then I’ve been learning that freedom is not just a lifestyle but a psychological and embodied task.

Freedom and responsibility are not opposites.
They come together.

When you are free - no one tells you what to do.
But that also means - there is NO ONE to tell you what to do 😅🤷🏼‍♀️

Because when there is no external structure, the structure has to come from within.
When there is no authority, you have to become your own authority.
When you can go anywhere, you have to choose where to stay.
When you can do anything, you have to decide what really matters.

From embodied prospective: too much structure - the body tightens, collapses, feels trapped.
Too much freedom - the body can feel ungrounded, scattered, without direction.

And I’m not writing this because I have mastered it.
I’m writing this because I am still learning how to live between structure and freedom, between holding and letting go.

Not how to be free,
but how to hold freedom and responsibility at the same time.

Resistance often arrives before change.

But when it appears, it rarely feels that way.

Last week I watched resistance in my body and mind during one - week of the WuMa TaiJi Slow Form 1 practice with Shifu Zuan - The head master of Shaolin Temple Europe and his team Journey into oneself.

It challenged me both mentally and physically.

Not because I’m unfamiliar with discipline or long postures. My body knows those well through 8 years of Kundalini Yoga.

But moving with such slow precision for hours was something entirely different.

At the same time, something in my mind kept quietly asking:

Is this right for me?

For many years my embodied practice has lived in spaces like Kundalini Yoga, spontaneous movement, Five Rhythms, and Contact Improvisation -where movement emerges organically and energy flows freely through the body.

Tai Chi approaches energy very differently (at least the form I’ve studied).

In many Kundalini practices the emphasis is on activating energy.

In Tai Chi the practice is about grounding it through the body with structure, direction, and precision.

And that difference created resistance.

Yet in the middle of those long hours of practice something else would occasionally happen.

For brief moments the mind would drop away and the movement became almost hypnotic - like a moving meditation.

Then the mind would return again.

I see something similar in therapy.

When resistance appears, clients sometimes think the therapy has stopped working, or that it’s time to leave the process.

But often resistance is not the end.

It’s a doorway.

In a world that constantly trains our attention toward quick stimulation and instant results - practices that slow us down can feel uncomfortable.

Yet they also invite something deeper.

Not chasing the next high.

But grounding.

Sometimes the real work begins exactly where we want to turn away.

I’m still in the process of watching the resistance and sensing whether this is a practice I want to commit to more deeply.

Maybe this is just chapter one.

For many years I’ve been searching for home.

Moving between countries, continents, houses.
Following a feeling I couldn’t quite name.

A place where the body can land and simply say: ah…

Two years ago I found a sense of that in Devon.

And now I’m living in a small beach house here in Thailand.

When I moved in I couldn’t stop smiling. Pure joy.

And at the same time a deep sense of peace, like something inside quietly settled.

The interesting part is… I know this place is temporary. Yet the feeling of being at home is here.

These past eight years have also been an integration since my father passed away while I was here in Koh Phangan.

The day after he died, I made a small shrine on the beach nearby to light a candle and pray.
This house happens to be just around the corner from that place.

Life sometimes weaves things together quietly.

And there is Tata (dad in Polish) - a dog who belongs to someone else but comes here every day for food and cuddles.

Right now I’m sitting on the terrace looking at the sea.

I feel no urge to go anywhere.

Just a quiet sense of contentment - even if only for a moment in time.

What does home feel like for you?

Yesterday I welcomed the Year of the Horse in the rain.

Morning meditation.
A migraine.
Dorm sleep.
Uncertainty.

And then qi gong with Shi Fu Zuan under heavy tropical rain.
Slow, repetitive movements.
Mind resisting.
Body wanting fire.
Sky pouring water.

Part of me wanted the Horse to feel like flames, momentum, galloping forward.
Instead, it felt like standing still in the rain, holding posture, breathing through discomfort.

In the evening I moved into blindfold Contact Improvisation - slow listening through skin, weight, gravity, responsiveness. Letting the body lead without forcing direction.

And that’s when it landed:

The Horse is not frantic speed.
It’s power contained in structure.
It’s movement that begins from stillness.
It’s direction without urgency.

“For some, Horse energy means galloping. For others, it means containing the power, steady” - words of Shi Heng Zuan - Headmaster of Shaolin Temple in Europe

This year I’m not galloping to prove anything.
My intention is to build steady expansion.

If this year is asking you to move from embodied clarity - I’d love to work with you. Get in touch.

Embodiment. Intimacy. Regulation. Direction.
The work begins in the body.

Today it’s Chinese New Year and we enter the Year of the Horse.

The Horse is fire, movement, freedom, momentum. In personal development terms, this is a year that asks:
Where are you holding yourself back?
Where is your energy wanting to move?

The Horse doesn’t overthink. It runs when it’s time to run. It trusts instinct, vitality, direction. There’s something powerful about that — especially if you’re someone who tends to process, reflect, analyse (like I do).

This week I visited a Chinese temple here in Thailand. I hadn’t expected to find it — and discovering it felt meaningful in itself. I was there for a CI workshop exploring Tai Chi principles and ancestral Neidan practices: the microcosmic orbit through movement mechanics, centre and axes, Peng energy, whole-body power.

It was fascinating to experience these internal principles not as ideas, but through the body. Energy circulating. Structure aligning.

For me, this feels aligned with the Year of the Horse: not forcing movement -
but allowing aligned power to emerge.

Where movement goes, energy flows.

And perhaps this year asks us to move - not from restlessness, but from inner clarity.

I visited a waterfall in a national park in the island.

Not wild jungle. Marked paths. Other walkers.
And the waterfall itself was mostly dry 😂

But it still held its essence.

Standing there, I was reminded: embodiment is simple.
It’s contact. Feet on stone. Warm air on skin. Listening.

Even with barely any water flowing, you could feel the shape of it - the path it takes, the force it carries when in season.

Nature doesn’t rush to perform.
It moves in cycles.

Exploration is expansion as we meet ourselves in new landscapes.

Even a quiet waterfall has something to teach.

18 Rules of life - so simple but we make it so complicated.
What touched me the most is:
1.Take into account that great love and great achievement involve great risk.
3. Follow the 3 Rs: Respect for self, Respect for others, Responsibility for all your actions.
8. Spend some time alone every day (I would add to this - away from your phone)
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
15. Be gentle with the earth
17. Best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
