I had a short trip to WWT Slimbridge today, spur of the moment. I hadn’t been since the end of March as I have had a busy few weeks, but I really was missing the place.

There were so many beautiful birds, and their young, and the plants at the moment are just gorgeous. Yes, I go there for the plants and waterscapes….
There are swathes of oxeye daisies, cow parsley and many more meadow and wetland plants. I was in awe of the new planting alongside the restaurant which was absolutely stunning with height, structure, layers of plant and leaf shapes, and blues and soft mauves, and I want to go back soon to sketch it!

I did enjoy sketching in the South Lake Discovery Hide - mesmerising and calming as always with the sounds of the bird calls, the shimmering water , gulls swooping, ducks dipping and quite a few avocets.

I am really happy that ‘Aglow’ has now found its new home as a result of appearing in my recent show at 🍂 🔴
This painting is a really important one to me because when I painted it I was stretching myself into some new territory with the colours, and the somewhat abstracted areas, and searching for ways of painting light.

Thank you 🙏

I had a nice painting session with this little still life yesterday - using some peppermint and bladder campion from the garden in a souvenir beer bottle from my London trip.
The beautifully labelled bottle is from and it’s their special edition Vienna Lager sold at (when we visited Charlie had a bottle with lunch ).

It’s been a busy few weeks, with the exhibition, the exhibition prep, less painting than usual and a lot of vital and enjoyable life stuff!
Yesterday I did some framing, including this Pink painting, which I’m hoping I may show in an exhibition late summer.
I painted this en plein air in Montpellier, Cheltenham of the shop which was looking so pretty in the sunshine last summer. The warmth of the pink and the stonework, and the twinkling fairy lights were impossible to ignore!

This is my first time painting en plein air in 2 months - not sure a town scene was the easiest view for dipping my toe in the water!
I love the views from higher up in Stroud town centre where you can feel the town’s place within the green rural landscape.
I probably over blued the sky but otherwise it looks how it felt - a peaceful Sunday morning, not many people, the buttery warmth of the stone, the painted walls and brickwork.
Also for me a much needed spell of soft and intuitive painting away from the complicated large piece I am ( still) working on.

If you haven’t been yet it’s really worth a visit! Some fantastic vintage sellers plus of course Five Valleys Gallery where you can buy some fabulous original local art ☺️

Since its official opening in April - marked by a visit from Dame Joanna Lumley - the Home of Vintage at Five Valleys is becoming one of Stroud’s most talked‑about new destinations for independent shops, vintage, and art.

This is ‘Between the Bridges’ and so far I think this painting has drawn the most responses from visitors.

The view is along the Gloucester Sharpness canal at Quedgeley, with Sellars Bridge some way behind and Rea Bridge unseen ahead, around the bend. The water here is especially wide and seems to be always calm. It’s a very tranquil place.

So many people are familiar with this towpath walk, whether running along it, or rescuing their dog that jumped in the canal at this spot, or just strolling along like I do!

My paintings have definitely resonated with people, and I am really enjoying sharing ‘my Gloucester’ and hearing wonderful tales and sharing affection for the place I love. My exhibition is open until Sunday afternoon, so if you are in the the city centre enjoying what promises to be glorious weather, please drop in!

When I was at today I was very happy to see that my oil on paper study of love-in-a-mist had sold recently. I really loved this painting!

Swipe for a couple of other unframed, mounted originals that I have sold here.

At the gallery there are several browsers of prints and unframed originals, in addition to the framed pieces, by many of our artists. These represent excellent value, and enable the buyer to frame exactly as they wish.

I have my browser beside my painting section, and refresh it regularly, relishing the opportunity to offer these pieces for sale, mounted and backed with archival materials and cello wrapped to keep pristine until you are ready to frame.
