Reothart nan Ealain is excited to be offering Wayfinder, an online course running for 12 sessions across six months from September to March.
Facilitated by Gaelic visual artist Màiri Gillies, these fortnightly sessions encourage artists to embed their creative practice into place-based, embodied knowing by exploring Gaelic ways of seeing in relation to both the physical and inner landscapes.

Escape into your own life. Steady away, Wayfinder.

In Gaelic culture, way-markers were often stones or cairns sometimes to be used from the sea to navigate, other times to mark routes across the landscape or boundaries. They were named, used and understood as visual cues in relation to movement and the environment by humans.

There is a rich tapestry of Gaelic ‘ways of seeing’ and a deep cultural connection with the landscape, its form, its beings and its lore. These come together to form a ‘living landscape’ and it’s from understanding these interconnected relationships that our course stems.

The Wayfinder course will take participants on a voyage exploring personal, pace-based themes as routes back into our creative practices. Working as a collective, supporting our peers, we will form an open and fun learning environment to bring awareness around our internal navigation points which steer our creative practices.

Immense chuffed to bits for this wonderful gang of artist on the opening of their group show 'Uinneagan' at Hulabhaig gallery in Lewis.

I've been lucky enough to work with each of these women and facilitate their collaborative place-based collective as they continued on their journeys from completing the Sense of Place course.

Form and Flow

A three day course in sculpture introducing casting and carving 10-13th June 2025

Form and flow Sculpture course is a balance of technical skill-based learning alongside time to play and experiment with facilitation to turn research into practice. Some of the taught skills will include drawing for sculpture, moulding, casting, carving and assemblage.

Participants will be taken on guided research trips into the surrounding living landscape for inspiration, learning about Gaelic culture and ‘ways of seeing’ that inform sculptural practices, before heading into the studio for a technical lesson and being encouraged to play, experiment and make.

Day one
Research for Sculpture - expedition out into the landscape looking at inspiration sources and different recording methods from photographing, drawing and collecting found materials getting our eye into thinking in three dimensions and exploring form.

Day two
Casting - a studio day learning the technical skills to make moulds out of cold casting silicone and clays to create plaster casts. Learn which materials and methods you need to be able to play with casting different objects to capture textures and forms.

Day three
Carving - a studio day playing with plaster casts including those from the previous day to clean up multiples, or give from and shape to new pieces.

Delighted to share our full programme of courses for 2024 at Reothart nan Ealain.

We have a wide range of offerings from online or in-person, from half day sessions to full creative retreats.

So whether your interested in learning more about Gaelic ways of seeing the world, practicing your skills in printmaking or sculpture, reconnecting to the landscape in new creative ways or just long for peaceful time to unwind on one of our retreats we're sure there'll be a course for you!

It was lovely to take these intrepid art explorers for a three hour session on Seabhal.
Lots of chats around Gaelic culture, Landownership, the Clearances, local tales and lore, placenames, crofting, the gaelic colour spectrum and much more.

New course

Join artist Danielle Macleod for an insight into her place-based creative practice on Tuesday for our day long course.

Danielle takes lore, stories and place to the next level in fun, creative and intruiging ways. On this full day course (10am-4pm) you will adventure into the living landscape of Uig to explore and collect materials to create your own wearable sculpture. Taking inspiration through the stories and folktales specific to our environment of Uig, participants will gather natural and found materials from a walk before returning to the classroom to begin building their sculptures.
Participants will be taught how to make a basic sculpture frame from willow and cardboard as a base, and will be encouraged to play and experiment with how they incorporate their found materials into their piece. After completing the sculptures, participants will head back outdoors to photograph their wearable sculptures back out in the environment.
Participants will have the opportunity to both model their sculptures and direct a shoot, taking photographs using their own camera or mobile phone camera. During this part of the workshop participants will learn about visual storytelling through the camera, and practice this using their wearable sculptures.

By the end of the session we hope participants will leave with smiles, sculptures and a collection of evocative images that connect them to their day in Uig.
