For years, our home has been a hub for friends and family gatherings. I make my pieces to be used and enjoyed every day, creating little moments of connection over food and drink.

Friendship born of grief, here I am with the lovely talking about the foundation she set up after her husband Tom passed when their children were just 3, 6, and 8. Her background in teaching, combined with her own experience of loss, inspired her to create The Marfleet Foundation, which provides schools with training, guidance, and resources to support bereaved children.

Huge thanks to one of us for capturing these fab moments, and to a few of my favourite potters whose mugs I’m using daily and Fiona Booy Ceramics.

Last night a conversation with a friend reminded me of this little disaster.
I was so happy, throwing a big bowl on the wheel. Then I thought, I’ll drip some slip on it to make it more interesting.

The pot became too wet and collapsed.

Failures are frustrating, but they’re the lessons I remember the longest.

Behind every piece is a lot of unseen work, especially recycling clay. Listen to the sound it makes as it meets water. I left the clay quite wet this time so it could be mixed with a drier batch for a perfect consistency.

Back in the studio, doing prep for the next lot of work while listening to my ever-growing, eclectic playlist. Might be heading in a less functional direction for a bit. Possibly testing the well-loved territory of fragile pieces.

I keep going back and forth on this one. My instinct says reglaze, my potter friends agree… and yet so many of you who saw it felt it was already complete.
Would you change the inner surface to a shinier glaze, or leave it untouched?

Since last Christmas, I’ve started writing this post so many times.
Meet the man behind Marika Makes, beautifully captured by the talented
He was the one who pushed me to take my very first class, when I wasn’t confident enough to do it myself. The one who set up my very first studio for me in Slovakia.
Always believing in me, often more than I believed in myself. Always supporting, encouraging, and making space for this work to grow — through doubt, change, and all the in-between moments.
I miss him every day. I’ve learned I can only truly create when I’m happy, so please bear with me, friends, as I find my way back there 🤍

Choosing to volunteer with a Christmas charity means this is my busiest time of year. I only just lit my third Advent candle and decided to treat myself a little early with our traditional Christmas waffles, lovingly made by a very special friend who helps keep our homeland traditions alive.

Served on one of my latest cheeseboards, made with lace from my mother’s wedding dress.
