Between teaching my painting classes and working at my local high school, I've been creating a series of mini abstract landscape paintings inspired by the beauty of my local, rural landscape. I will be mounting these pieces, and they will be available for sale on my online shop next week.

I've lost myself in a painting-painting-painting loop this week... if you can figure it out, please enlighten me 😆.
On a more relaxing note, I'm loving my new moorland landscape series - still all unfinished, but the colours and brush strokes are just what I need going on in my practice right now.

I've surprised myself this week by managing to start a new painting. It's a small piece, but I really like this size canvas because it's manageable to get finished when I have less time to paint. I'm looking forward to getting a bit more done tomorrow.

•• Step into my process

I've developed a few techniques to bring my paintings to life, and one of my favorites is using a grid system. It's especially helpful when working on intricate pieces. I like building the composition this way, until eventually I break away from the lines and the photo, and work more intuitively.

This particular piece is inspired by a photo I took along the Rochdale Canal in Todmorden. I walk this route daily , all year round, with my dog Barbara. I think she loves it just as much as I do!

•• Movement and atmosphere

I started a mini moorland painting this afternoon.
I'm paying closer attention to how the layers of colour interact with each other, whilst continuing to follow a process of building up the colour palette and brush strokes to create movement and atmosphere.

Working from my kitchen table at home this afternoon, I painstakingly built this mini landscape.
I say built because that's what I felt like I was doing, strand by strand, colour by colour, using my teeny tiny brush strokes.
I'm still not sure it's quite finished yet ...
