Did you know…
I often get asked how the gold details on the Snowflake Mug get so shiny. It’s actually a really nerve-wracking process called Lustre Firing.
Here is the science (and stress) behind the sparkle:
1️⃣ Real Gold: I use a solution of real 24K gold dissolved in pine oils and resins. When I paint it on, it looks like sticky brown varnish - so I have to trust my hand because I can’t see the shine yet! I have to wear a mask because of the fumes, and be careful how thickly I apply the solution - too think and it will run off, too thin and it will turn purple!
2️⃣ Third Firing: Most pottery goes into the kiln twice. But for gold, I have to put the glazed mug back in for a third time.
3️⃣ The Magic Number: I heat the kiln slowly to exactly ~700°C–800°C. If it gets too hot, the gold burns off. If it’s too cool, it wipes right off. But if it’s just right... the oils burn away and leave a pure, mirror-bright layer of 24 karat gold fused to the glaze forever. 🔥
It’s a high-risk process (if I make a mistake at this stage, the whole mug is ruined!), but seeing them come out of the kiln sparkling makes it all worth it.
