The Cabaret’s Over is not just a retelling of the musical Cabaret. Where Cabaret uses music and spectacle, this version steps behind the curtain - into poverty, boarding houses, cramped rooms, and fragile lives lived just out of the spotlight.

These are not abstract concepts for our director and author Lou, they are informed by her family’s real experiences. Her grandmother Iris May was part of a jazz dance troupe who toured Europe, and were one of the last foreign groups ordered to leave Germany when the N***s labelled jazz music as ‘degenerate’. Her stories of working and living in a country being consumed by N***sm have informed Lou’s retelling of Christopher Isherwood’s celebrated novel, itself based on his own experiences in 1930’s Berlin. The result is an exceptional mix of deeply personal themes with instantly recognisable and well-known characters and plot lines.

If you would like to be part of the creation of such a unique piece of theatre, come along to our auditions on 23rd May – from 10.30 at Smarden Charter Hall. You can find character lists, further information and read the script at the link below, or in our bio.

Introducing our Author and Director – Lou Nelson-Chambers!

A third-generation performer, Lou built a 15+ year career in professional theatre, training at Anna Scher’s and LAMDA under Colin Cook, with mentors including John Hurt and Kenneth Haigh. Her work spans the UK and internationally across theatre, TV, and commercials—from Shakespeare at the Young Vic to comedy, experimental work, and solo performance.
She toured with Pan Projects across the UK, Germany, and India, exploring global traditions including Yakshaganna, Noh, Chinese Opera, and Kathakali—all with a strong focus on storytelling.

Now based in Kent, Lou works as a teacher/director, helping performers build confidence, sharpen communication, and connect more deeply with their audiences.

We’re thrilled to have her as our director, especially as she’s chosen us to premiere her brilliant new piece 🥰
