Painting in Scotland!

This week I'm back up in Scotland preparing for the last workshop of the year up here!

I'm trying to keep the colours simple and bold for these little works on paper!

Let the marks really sing! To capture to essence of the place with fluid ink washes and pastel.

Hello and welcome to my world!

Many of you follow my art, but don't know much about me!
So I thought its nice to share! 😝

Art is my life. It's my passion and my world… but I have so many other passions.

I share my life with my husband Jon, who I've known since I was 26 yrs old ❤️ he is now in my art business 😍

I LOVE being high up in mountains. Higher the better!

I never ever get tired of Scotland. It’s another world! 😍

I wanted to create books, so I did! Google ‘Sam Boughton children books’ 😝

I could never resist a dog sketch…they became a range of cards!
But in the end the love of landscape art took over.

And my life took a HUGE turn…
I started creating landscape art everyday…

Now, I'm creating something very special.
A movement of Plein Air Landscape artists!

Drawing by The Estuary

I've been experimenting with drawing techniques this weekend and I've discover this amazing combo of Art Graf with water. I'm using it to combine wet and dry marks using one pigment medium and it’s working a treat! Especially for landscape drawing, when you want to travel light!

The sketchbook is taking the water and drawing medium really well too. It's not buckling.

Thought you'd like to see!

Focus on this ONE thing to shift your art...
Let go of the need to get it right.

That was the turning point for me.
I used to spend hours trying to perfect every mark, every shape, every colour.
But the more I tried to control the outcome, the less connected I felt to the work.

Everything changed when I stopped aiming for perfect…
and started responding to what I was feeling.

That’s when the freedom came in. That’s when the sketches loosened. That’s when it started to feel like me again.

So if you’ve been feeling stuck, tight, or frustrated, focus on this:
Let go. Trust your instincts. And see what happens.

MY BIGGEST MINDSET SHIFTS

I’d say one of THE biggest blockers for your art can be comparing where someone is in their artists journey, to where you are in yours.

We all do it! Whatever stage we’re at in our art. But it can bleed the joy out of your art practice.
It can make you question where you are, and whether your work is really any good.😌

If someone is really ahead, and where you want to be, maybe reflect on why you are where you are? And they are where they are?

Maybe you’ve made sacrifices or other commitments and not had the time to give to your art?
Or you came to your art later?
Or you have only just started to honour the creative part of yourself? Through lack of confidence?

And the people ahead of you…. What have they had to sacrifice or do to be where they are? Unsteady income? Hours and hours honing their skills? Not much free time?

Grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side.
So try and shift your mind to be kinder on yourself and others when you slip into the comparison mode!
I know it’s helped me!

REPEAT / REPEAT / REPEAT

This is probably the biggest “takeaway’ artists get who take my in-person workshops…

They are amazed by the amount of repetition involved to create a painting that looks so simple and minimal!
Suddenly, those elegant brush marks, don’t seem that simple.

I truly believe this is where repetition can create mastery. Every repeated sketch or painted study teaches you something new. It makes you look again.
Think again, and try again.
Each time creating something different yet similar. You build confidence. This is what creates a signature style, or look to your work.

So, next time you notice an area of your practice that feels weaker than other areas, ask yourself what can you repeat and repeat until you get stronger!

Is it colour? Is it mark-making? Is it drawing?

Let me know…

Do you feel STUCK and PRESSURED by your own perfection?
Do your landscape studies lack LIFE and SPONTANEITY?

You don’t need more materials!
Or talent!
Or years of experience!
You just need to let go of this idea of perfection and be open to making more ‘suggestive’ marks.
I can show you how!

In my short online course you’ll learn 3 techniques to really change your approach.

You don’t need to figure it all out on your own!

Over the years I’ve tested and trialed so many art materials. I now have my firm favourites.

BRUSHES: I don’t buy expensive brushes, I use old decorators brushes with natural bristles. They absorb water and get lovely and worn, so they all have lots of character!

SKETCHBOOKS: I use a brand from Ryman’s Stationers here in the UK. It’s a soft cream paper and absorbs water better than cartridge. You need to experiment with sketchbooks to find your one!

6B PENCILS: I love the dark soft marks you get. Try out brands. I like to sharpen mine with a knife to get sharp points.

SOFT PASTELS: I only use Unison Pastels. They are a UK company and make the best, intense pastels. They draw really well and don’t crumble.

ACRYLIC INKS: I’ve used every ink you can imagine! But I only buy these now because of the light weight plastic bottles and size. No more heavy glass bottles!

I’ve put this into a handy 1 page PDF for you.

Do you struggle with colour?

I REALLY struggled with colour until I started doing this:

🖍 Use a maximum of 3 primaries for a while, along with a couple of earth colours. My palette is ONLY ultramarine blue / cadmium yellow/ magenta / burnt sienna / raw umber (and a black and white) Learn to mix all your colours just from these. (Change out the ultramarine for a cerulean blue if you like icy blues)

🖍 When ever you mix a new colour, mix a little bit of all the other colours into it. You will harmonise your palette

🖍 If you work in mixed media, use the SAME set of primaries across ALL your mediums. Then if you switch medium, you can STILL get exactly the same colour!
