STEWART GEDDES | KAIROS

Opening Tuesday 13 October, 6–9pm at TM Gallery, King’s Cross, London. ✨

CLOSE Gallery is delighted to present Kairos, a new exhibition of recent paintings by Stewart Geddes, presented in collaboration with TM Lighting and curated by Freeny Yianni.

Taking its title from the Ancient Greek kairos (καιρός), meaning the right, critical or opportune moment, the exhibition marks a point of renewed clarity in Geddes’ practice. Improvisation remains central, but across this new body of work, intuition and deliberation increasingly come together as colour, gesture and structure gradually find their place.

Geddes’ paintings evolve through a process of action, pause and response. Forms rotate, overlap and gather across the canvas, while each work develops through successive decisions rather than towards a predetermined destination. Kairos reflects precisely this moment of recognition: knowing when to act, when to wait, and when a painting has found its direction.

Rooted in abstraction yet shaped by Geddes’ longstanding relationship with landscape, the works carry traces of remembered environments, architecture, movement and atmosphere into the studio.

Private View | Tuesday 13 October, 6–9pm

MEET THE ARTIST | MAGNUS HAMMICK

Working between London and Somerset, Magnus Hammick is a painter and performance artist whose practice explores the natural landscape through abstraction, repetition and process.

Hammick’s non-representational works begin with observations of landscape, which are gradually transformed through repeated gestures and process-led methods. Beneath their abstract surfaces, traces of the natural world remain, encouraging the viewer to search for the landscape embedded within each work.

Central to Hammick’s practice is an interest in participation and the relationship between artist, artwork and audience. Rather than relying on complex technologies to create immersive experiences, he takes a deliberately reductive approach, creating space for discussion, interpretation and open-ended outcomes. The spectator is invited not simply to observe, but to become an active presence within the work.

For LOOK OUT, Hammick presents paintings rooted in the Somerset landscape, where instinctive mark-making and close observation come together to create works that are at once immediate and contemplative. His practice reflects the exhibition’s wider exploration of landscape as something experienced, remembered and continually transformed.

Last night, collectors, art world figures and friends gathered at Close for “Between Empires: Gordon Cheung in Conversation with Carrie Scott”, an evening celebrating a new body of work by British artist Gordon Cheung, presented by Close.

The evening opened with a welcome from CLOSE Founder and Creative Director Freeny Yianni . It was a treat to hear Gordon Cheung in conversation with curator, art historian and broadcaster Carrie Scott - Art Historian + Curator , founder of Seen . The dynamic conversation covered themes of Cheung’s Vanitas works, preoccupied with power, trade and the rise and fall of civilisations that run through his work.

Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, British - Chinese Cheung has developed a distinctive visual language that merges physical and digital processes, often incorporating financial data as both material and conceptual framework. His work reflects on the psychological and geopolitical conditions of global capitalism, exploring how narratives of identity, territory, and belief are constructed, contested, and destabilised.

Presented in partnership with The Wick.

MEET THE ARTIST | DIEN BERZIGA

London-based Chinese-Italian artist Dien Berziga creates works that explore individuality and the intimate stories found within urban landscapes.

Blending traditional forms with contemporary techniques, Berziga’s practice moves between the handcrafted and the digital. His paintings capture everyday encounters within the city, transforming seemingly ordinary moments into personal reflections on place, memory and perception.

His work considers the structures and spaces we move through each day, and the subtle ways they shape how we experience the world around us. Through a refined visual language, Berziga turns fragments of urban life into scenes that feel both deeply personal and widely familiar.

For LOOK OUT, his work expands the idea of landscape into the built environment, exploring how the spaces around us become intertwined with memory, identity and ways of seeing.

MEET THE ARTIST | SARAH GILLESPIE

Artist and printmaker Sarah Gillespie is known for her meticulous mezzotints and drawings exploring landscape, ecology and the fragile lives that exist within the natural world.

Originally trained in painting, Gillespie studied historical methods and materials in Paris before reading Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford. In 2012, she returned to drawing and printmaking, specialising in the centuries-old technique of mezzotint engraving.

Her longstanding interest in landscape has increasingly focused on moths and the dramatic decline of insect populations caused by habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. Gillespie has described moths as the “canaries in the coalmine” of the biodiversity crisis, using their delicate presence to draw attention to environmental change that can otherwise go unseen.

Her work is held in major public collections including the V&A, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum and Bibliothèque nationale de France. In recent years, her research and commissions have continued to explore threatened species and the complex relationship between art, natural history and conservation.

Gillespie’s most recent large-scale drawings shift attention towards the hidden, shimmering life of the natural world, celebrating an environment that is not simply observed by us, but alive and responsive in its own right.

For LOOK OUT, her work brings an ecological urgency to the exhibition’s exploration of landscape, asking us to look more closely at what inhabits it, what is disappearing, and what we risk losing.

MEET THE ARTIST | DAVID ABBOTT

Bristol-based artist David Abbott creates paintings that bring together observation, memory and perception, exploring landscape as both a physical place and a space shaped by what we project onto it.

Drawn to the cyclical rhythms of the natural world, Abbott sees landscape as an allegory for the instability and change of our own lives. His paintings move between seasonal shifts and much slower geological or historical time, creating scenes that feel momentarily suspended while also suggesting something deeper and more enduring beneath them.

Across his work, landscape becomes a witness to human experience: a source of solace, a repository of hidden histories, and the setting for love, loss, tragedy and comedy. At times his paintings resolve into recognisable places; elsewhere they fragment into abstract forms, moving fluidly between the external world and an internal, remembered one.

Layers of paint often conceal earlier images beneath the surface, reinforcing Abbott’s interest in how memory accumulates, disappears and resurfaces. Painting becomes a way of excavating what has been forgotten and navigating the tension between inhabiting the present and dwelling in the past.

For LOOK OUT, Abbott’s work speaks directly to the exhibition’s exploration of landscape as a place of memory, change and emotional connection: an environment deeply entwined with our lives, yet always existing beyond us.

MEET THE ARTIST | CHRISTABEL BLACKBURN

London-based artist Christabel Blackburn creates atmospheric paintings that explore the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Through a sensitively reduced visual language, she distils contemporary life into quiet, concentrated scenes, where solitary figures move through streets, galleries and carefully constructed environments.

Stripped of much of the visual noise of the twenty-first century, Blackburn’s paintings occupy a space between reality and memory. Flat planes, saturated colour and restrained detail create a sense of stillness and psychological suspension, while her figures appear absorbed in their own worlds.

Beneath this apparent calm lies a subtle tension. Blackburn’s work moves between order and isolation, intimacy and alienation, leaving space for the viewer to consider how we navigate both our physical surroundings and our internal landscapes.

For LOOK OUT, her work expands the exhibition’s exploration of landscape beyond the natural world, considering the environments we construct, move through and carry within us.

ONYA McCAUSLAND | The Residues

CLOSE Gallery and Proposition are pleased to announce The Residues, a solo exhibition by , opening at Proposition Bethnal Green on Saturday 10th October.

McCausland’s new works continue her exploration of landscapes transformed by extraction, industry and environmental change. Using materials collected from industrial land, mine tailings and waste dams, she transforms these residues into dense, site-specific pigments through processes of burning, milling and refining.

The resulting paintings are less representations of landscape than material records of its transformation. Their surfaces carry traces of geology, industrial processes and ecological aftermath, revealing the lasting changes inscribed into the earth.

Presented in collaboration with Proposition Studios, The Residues brings together McCausland’s material and site-specific research with a shared commitment to ecological awareness, responsible stewardship and our changing relationship with the environment.
