A young girl discovered a new hobby.
Taught by her grandmother, crochet brought out her creative side and she's a natural.
Her talent never leaves, despite some challenging academic years...It would appear that dyslexia wasn't acknowledged in the 1980's. After being told repeatedly by your peers that you'll never amount to anything, you even begin to believe the narrative yourself.
Teenage years came and went, boyfriends and careers began and all the while crochet was a constant.
A comfort to relax to, and now a hobby to enjoy with her mother.
Fast forward to mid life and the woman reaches a cross roads when life throws some difficult challenges her way .
"Do what makes you happy" was the advice from her husband.
So she took a gamble...and the shop was opened.
Just a very small selection of stock, it took all the capital she had. But combined with a lifetime of knowledge and the determination to succeed.
Crochet classes began, and people responded instantly.
The stock gradually increased as customers started spending.
The demand grew so quickly that more space was needed and the size of the shop doubled in the first year.
She had an incredible talent of writing her very own patterns in a unique way that her clients love, and can easily understand.
She designs and makes her own crochet characters, clothing, keyrings and everything her imagination can create.
Her online community is many thousands and her in person students is in the hundreds.
She has nearly 200, 5 star reviews online.
Her sought after workshops now book months in advance.
Her inclusive, reassuring, relaxed teaching style is adapted to every client including left handed, one handed, partially sighted, all abilities, young and old.
She has built a supportive community where new friends are made, confidence is grown, and laughter is always heard. Hugs and a shoulder to cry on are also welcome...
And her secret is simply being herself and loving what she does.
Today, Shani launches the first of her very own book series. A colouring and story book for all ages, featuring her very own crochet characters which anyone can have a go at making !
