Somercotes Community Singers

Somercotes Community Singers We are a mixed choir of around 30 people, we sing musical theatre, pop and some classical music. In 2011, our current musical director Neil Farley took over.

Somercotes Community Singers was founded in September 1951, by the late Wilfred Clarke, who was a distinguished singer and voice coach. Following Wilfred's death in 1967, the choir was led by a number of conductors until 1974 when the late Stuart Bradshaw became the musical director. Towards the end of 1999, Stephen Wall took over as the musical director, bringing the choir into singing a more mod

ern repertoire. Neil, a vocal coach and instrumental teacher, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and brings a lot of experience to the choir. We are pleased and proud to have Neil as our musical director along with John Hobbs as our accompanist.

FASCINATING FACTS:
Did you know the Somercotes Community Singers group has a long-established history, it was formed in September 1951 by Wilfred Clarke and was originally known as the Somercotes Evening Institute Choir, and later becoming Somercotes Choral Society.
Attached below is a fascinating brochure from 1979 when the Somercotes Choral Society made their first professionally recorded Long Playing record, take a look it’s a really interesting document. Special thanks go to our very own Caroline Garrigan for preserving this and many other valuable documents, Caroline and her family also have a long history with the group.

This week Tuesday 17th March we will be rehearsing the following 10 classics: Fly Me To the Moon, So Deep is the Night, Night of Stars and Night of Love, The Way You Look Tonight, Stormy Weather, Autumn Leaves, Sunrise Sunset, Blue Skies and Mr Blue Sky, but, before any singing takes place, our Musical Director Neil Farley and Piano Accompanist John Hobbs take us through a 10 minute vocal warm-up which is extremely good fun to do whilst having a chance to clear our throats and get out any coughs before we begin, have a little listen to the attached audio clip and if you would like to hear how we sound when singing, come and have a listen on Tuesday nights 7:15 at Swanwick Methodist Church, Derby Rd, DE55 1AA, or, at our Spring Concert on April 25th full details to follow.

SOMERCOTES COMMUNITY SINGERS NEEDS YOU👍
We have been very fortunate recently with new 4 new female members joining in recent months which is great news so this is a plea to the FELLAS out there, come along and try community singing, you don’t need to be able to read music and you don’t need to have sung before, our Musical Director will help you to determine whether you voice is Baritone, Tenor or Alto. Community singing is great fun and has many health benefits, don’t take our word for it, check out the information by Oxford University https://www.ox.ac.uk/research/choir-singing-improves-health-happiness-%E2%80%93-and-perfect-icebreaker
If you would like to give us a try we rehearse on Tuesday nights 7:15 to 9:15 at Swanwick Methodist Church, Derby Rd, DE55 1AA and we even have a social break in between 😊.
