EXCURSIA - Founded in early 2015 by two best friends: Sam Hill and A’Dan Shide. At just 14 and 15 years old respectively at the time, they both showed an aptitude for guitar and a mutual love of all things heavy metal. Sam was busy idolising the late, great Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott of Pantera, and A’Dan idolised Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. Between the two of them, they wanted to create a sound that was reminiscent of the 80s era of heavy metal, but with their own style. A’Dan came up with the name Excursia, as he felt that being in a band would be like taking a journey, and he was right. It has been a hell of a journey so far!
When forming the band, they had a friend fill in on bass for a while, but he wasn’t interested in the long haul, so they started advertising for the missing elements. First came Leia George, a teen drummer from Aberdare with a passion for System of a Down and stripped beanie hats. Her unique style and humour brought much to the band, but it was not destined to last. Leia left the band just after their first studio encounter in September 2017 in order to attend University in Nottingham. She remains very close friends with the entire band, and will always be a part of the Excursia family.
Bass was next to be filled, and in stepped Callum Fraser, a baby-faced anarchic punk rocker with a penchant for driving the other band members mad! His band practice antics try everyone’s patience, but he is another integral member of the band that we can’t live without.
Vocals proved to be tricky. Excursia’s first vocalist was the lovely Megg Evans, and whilst her vocals were brilliant, she did suffer from chronic stage fright. Eventually it was decided that the band would look for another singer, and Lewis Temby answered the call. 19 years old and hailing from Cwmbran, Lew quickly established himself as a prolific and talented lyric writer and vocalist. Able to write lyrics on the fly and vary his vocals from Anselmo style growls to Danzig style deep-voiced and soothing vocals, Lewis is a very adaptable singer. Whilst the band were a little concerned over his never-waning love of Axl Rose and his appetite for (destruction) getting stoned, Lewis has embraced the Excursia way of life and is a much loved member of the band. Lewis is both hardworking and incredibly laid back, which seems like an oxymoron, but that’s our Lewis!
When Leia parted ways with the band, it was with very heavy hearts that Excursia advertised for a new drummer. Enter Harry Paulett. Harry was known to A’Dan and saw the band’s plea on Facebook. He had just arrived home from University in Exeter and was looking for new experiences. Despite never having been in a band before except at school for a single concert, Harry adjusted quickly to the Excursia life. He has now helped write 2 songs with the band and is proving to be dedicated and reliable both at practice and live. Being slightly older than the rest of the band (he is 21), Harry is a little more serious, but that isn’t a bad thing. Between Callum and A’Dan (affectionately known as “The Crayon Twins) and their meme obsessions, and Lewis’s laid back attitude, Sam needed someone else in the band to help keep things balanced.
Speaking of Sam, he is a talented one alright! At just 17 years old he is playing solos that most experienced guitarists would balk at. How he manages to play his songs and mosh like he is looking for instant brain-damage nobody can explain, least of all him. His solo work is astoundingly good, and he often leaves the audience wondering how a kid can play like that! All I can say is that his talent is definitely not genetic…. ;-)
Excursia released their first Single (Rise) on 20th October 2017. Available on all good music sites, and on CD direct from the band, they are incredibly proud of their first studio outing. The single comprises 2 original songs and one re-imagined cover of This Corrosion by Sisters of Mercy.
Excursia are a proper live band with a passion for playing. If they could gig every night they would. They are each following their own education/training for jobs outside of the band, as they are realistic and grounded enough to realise that music rarely pays the bills, but until then, they will fight as hard as they can to bring the music they love to the masses.
Excursia; Heavy, Hard, Uncompromising, Passionate. For the journey.
