Deforestation is a contributing factor in our changing climate and is largely driven by our demand for meat - particularly beef, and . Thousands of species are being driven to , many already gone forever, and people are being forced from their homes and ancestral lands. ⁣

𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘬𝘶𝘥𝘢. ⁣

My latest environmental piece is focused on a small estuary seahorse, 𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘬𝘶𝘥𝘢, clinging on to a plastic cotton bud, based on the viral image famously photographed by off Sumbawa Island in Indonesia.
⁣
Justin’s account of the dive during which the photo was taken is sadly like so many we hear nowadays. A dive dominated by one thing - Plastic. ⁣
⁣
There are an estimated 5.25 trillion (that’s 5,250,000,000,000) pieces of plastic debris in the ocean according to scientists from the nonprofit advocacy group . ⁣
⁣
With 300 million tonnes of plastic waste being produced each year globally, and 79% of this ending up in landfill or oceans according to the , a monumental effort is needed to bring about change. ⁣
⁣
Never forget the basics: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, in that order. ⁣

Ｔｈｅ ｓｔｏｒｙ ｂｅｈｉｎｄ ｔｈｅ ｐｉｅｃｅｓ：⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Coal is the most polluting of the three fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), and is a major source of air pollution. The World Health Organisation estimates that fossil fuel pollution contributes to over 4.5 million premature deaths every year through the release of fine particulate matter to the air. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And then there is climate change. A number of developed nations have seen their coal consumption decrease over the last decade in favour of renewable energy and cleaner fossil fuels, however, globally coal use is still way beyond sustainable limits, with demand for coal and gas still high and at times increasing. For any chance of a healthy planet and health future, our energy demands simply have to shift away from highly polluting fossil fuels to cleaner forms of energy, and for that to happen there has to be demand from society for change - something I hope this piece can contribute towards. ⁣⁣

This piece is made up of numerous digital media headlines and articles pertaining to air pollution and its associated impacts. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The background is an acrylic pour that was done on to stretched canvas. After a long drying period, this was then removed from its frame and mounted on to a 30x40cm canvas board to allow for a flat and easily framable piece of art. ⁣⁣
