What a joy 😊

As a child with undiagnosed autism, I used to dread this time of year. So please think of those who struggle a lot more than others. Here's my thoughts in poetry called "The Dread" - inspired by the work of author Pete Wharmby, Autistic Author and my own experiences.

The Dread by Jon Brewer.

The knot in my stomach begins.
In shops, new shoes and uniforms are in.
School bags and stationary adorn the aisles.
And the trauma of facing a new class is hidden behind a sigh (and the fake smile).
Dreading the very thought of going back to school,
because I just didn't fit in to the system, the structure, or the rules.
Felt like a species from another world,
why couldn't I feel like all the other boys and girls?
Now I'm in my fifties and have learned to survive,
but please spare a thought for an autistic child.
They struggle more than others, and sometimes later diagnosed.
Disconnected, isolated, to name a few, the list grows.
So behind a happy face, or distress at little things,
school is like a mountain, and they fall apart at the seems.
So, look out for, and look after, the ones that feel "the dread"
because these gifted ones hold treasure,
and the key is in their hearts and heads.
Better understood, the system must provide,
another way of seeing things, just like the autistic child.

Will be hot footing it from the studio this Sunday with my Chaplaincy hat on (or hard hat ⛑️) to Thornton Baptist Chapel to share about the work of Milford Haven The Mission To Seafarers locally. 🚢 ⚓️ 🛳

Looking forward to visiting Thornton Baptist Chapel, this Sunday morning where our port chaplain, Rev'd Jon Brewer, will share about the mission, and the local welfare work to seafarers on the vessels that visit the Port of Milford Haven
