BRIAN JAMES - 'Kicks and Diabolik Licks'
In a Vive Le Rock interview from way back in issue 7 The legendary, and sadly no longer with us guitarist Brian James was speaking about Punk and what it meant to him.
"It was all about expression and fu***ng doing your own thing! It was about your fantasies."
Once a Punk always a Punk, as Brian James's final album 'Kicks and Diabolik Licks' testifies. Lyrically it's heavilly influenced by dark violent Italian fiction and films from the 60's and 70's. Musicaly, from the opening track 'In The Blood' there's no let up in the layers of growling guitar riffin' and lickin' going on amongst the sleazy bruising blues of songs like 'So Sad Sonny' and 'Giallo Yellow' then, there's a brilliantly beautiful and beguiling piano laden version of The Lords of The New Church's 'Dance With Me', sung by former Mo-Dettes singer Ramona. The jerky and jazzy closing track 'Happy Families' (aka 'Zombie Song' is the ultimate in expression, fantasy and doing your own thing. A fine and fitting end to Brian's fifty year Punk Rock'n'Roll career.
As a bonus you get the four songs (which were childhood faves of Brian's) from the Limited Edition 'Too Hot To Pop' vinyl only EP which will have Chuck Berry duck walking in his grave!
