The Unseen Midlife

The Unseen Midlife Midlife, seen differently. Small courage. Awkward moments. Doing things alone. Choosing more freedom. The Unseen Midlife | 2% Braver

Plot twist: you might not need another nap. You might need a different life. 😴😬

Ever had a weekend off…

and still felt exhausted by Monday? 😵‍💫☕

Midlife has made me realise burnout is not always about doing too much.

Sometimes it comes from spending too long in a life that no longer fits.

The job. 💻

The role you keep playing.

The expectations you are still carrying.

The version of yourself everyone is used to.

After a while, all of that can feel exactly like tiredness.

So maybe the question is not always:

“Do I need more rest?”

Maybe it is:

“Am I actually tired… or am I tired of this?” 😬

Being 2% Braver might mean being honest enough to tell the difference.

Because rest can help.

But sometimes honesty is the thing that changes everything. ✨

The family group chat is basically unpaid customer service. 😂📱

Midlife is opening the family group chat—

and immediately regretting it. 😂📱

Someone needs advice.

Someone is offended.

Someone has sent seventeen photos with absolutely no context.

And somehow, you have become customer service for the entire family. ☎️😬

But being available is not the same as being responsible.

You do not have to answer every question.

Fix every misunderstanding.

Or leap in before another adult has had the chance to behave like an adult.

Being 2% Braver might mean doing something radical:

Not replying immediately. 😱

Letting the silence sit.

Letting someone else work it out.

The family may survive twenty minutes without you.

Possibly even longer. 😂

I can sit through a three-hour play alone. Apparently twenty minutes in the foyer is where things get difficult.

Going to the theatre alone: 10/10. 🎭
The interval when everybody turns to the person they came with:
“Well…that is an exceptionally interesting wall.” 😂
Today's 2% Braver:
Don't miss the show because you're worried about the interval.

I used to think being “easygoing” was a personality strength.

Turns out it was also extremely convenient for everyone else. 😂

“I don’t mind.”

“Whatever works.”

“You choose.”

Lovely.

Except if you say that often enough, you can accidentally end up living a life chosen by committee. 😬

Midlife has made me realise that having preferences is not the same as being difficult.

Pick the restaurant. 🍷

Choose the destination. ✈️

Say what you actually want. 🙋‍♀️

Being 2% Braver might simply mean becoming slightly less agreeable.

You are not causing trouble.

You are finally participating in your own life. ✨

The internal committee has called an emergency meeting. 🚨

Agenda:
My hair.
My outfit.
My face.
My body.
Every questionable choice since 1987.

Meeting cancelled. I’m going out. 😂👜

Today’s 2% Braver:
Stop waiting until you feel perfectly assembled.

Pick up your bag.
Go.
Be in the room.

You are allowed to enjoy your own life.

🪣 Some things on my bucket list have been there so long—they qualify for a pension. 😂

Apparently, writing down “See the Canadian Rockies” is not the same as booking it. 🏔️✈️

This week’s 2% Braver:

Pick one dream. Give it a date.

A bucket list without dates is just very optimistic stationery. 📅

👋 New here? I’m Bernadette—welcome to the slightly messy middle. 😂

This is **The Unseen Midlife**—a place for anyone navigating adult children, ageing parents, changing bodies, solo adventures and the occasional emotional incident in aisle seven. 🛒

I talk honestly about the parts of midlife we don’t always say out loud—with warmth, humour and no pretending I have it all sorted.

Every week, I share a **2% Braver** moment: one small way to stop waiting, choose yourself and live a little more courageously.

If that sounds like your kind of place, stay awhile—and tell me where you’re joining from. 💛

At this age, uncomfortable shoes feel like attempted murder. 👠🚑

At this stage of life, I am no longer asking:

“Do I look impressive?”

I am asking:

“Can I still feel my toes?” 🦶😂

Honestly, that feels like growth.

Maybe being 2% Braver means choosing what actually suits you.

The shoes. 👟

The job. 💻

The relationship. 😬

The life. ✨

Comfort is not always giving up.

Sometimes it is finally refusing unnecessary pain.

And sometimes it is choosing trainers and carrying absolutely no guilt about it.

📸 I found an old photograph and thought:

“I remember her.”

She had plans. Interests.
And a handbag containing only her own belongings. 👜😂

I love my children deeply.

And I miss me.
