Inspired by the birth of his first son and experience as a sculpture, Mark developed a process that allowed him to create a series of high-quality life casts to preserve the memories of his son’s early years. After receiving a lot of interest from fellow new parents, Mark decided to form Canuck Castings – a company that specialises in plaster and epoxy baby casts. These miniature models are timele
ss pieces, available in a variety of finishes, framing options and mountings, and his personalised service ensures that you’re provided with mementos of those fleeting first months that you’ll treasure forever. About Canuck Castings
What does Canuck Castings offer you that an at-home casting kit doesn’t? Quite simply, we guarantee you high-quality results created to your specification and our exceptional standards. We use a superior material to plaster of paris, the material found in most basic kits, providing you with more durable and sustainable sculptures and, above all, we’ll do it in the comfort of your home. As any new parent will tell you, the first weeks – even months – of having a newborn leave little time or energy to combat casting those fidgety digits, often resulting in missed opportunities or poor-quality casts. Make the experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible by having us come to your home at a date and time of your convenience and then deliver the finished product to your door. Based in St Neots, Canuck Castings serves Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. We offer the service to babies aged 0 months to 1 year old and 4 years plus however, successful results have also been achieved with those up to two years depending on the individual (please get in touch to discuss opportunities for your toddler). Whether you have your baby’s hand, foot or both cast, you can choose from a range of finishes including natural white, antique silver, copper or gold, have them either mounted on a display-ready plinth – perfect for desktops or mantels – or within a custom box frame. Each finished product comes with an engraved plaque featuring your child’s name and age. Want a professional photograph of your baby to feature alongside your box-framed casts? Canuck Castings can provide this, as well as a referral discount for a full newborn shoot with Caroline Ann Photography, if required. Babies’ hands and feet change extremely quickly and it can be difficult to recall how tiny and delicate they once were, so preserve your memories, each little digit, line and fold in a precise replica for the years to come. Each cast makes precious parental mementos or a perfect gift for a grandparent or godparent. Contact us today to find out about any special offers, limited introductory pricing and our weekend and evening availability. The Process
Each session may vary in length depending on the infant’s behaviour and the number of castings, but expect to put aside an hour of your time. We also ask that you try to feed your baby just prior to our arrival so that they’re ideally content and drowsy. Before we begin the casting process will be explained in detail, along with how you can participate in the process and the options for finishes, giving you time to finish any feeds if necessary. The life-casting process is very quick. You will be asked to hold your baby’s hand/foot in a container that is filled with a moulding medium for 1- 2 minutes. The material that we use is non-toxic and biodegradable, but may stain clothes so we ask that you and your child dress appropriately. The hand/foot will then be wriggled free and the mould checked to ensure a quality cast can be obtained. The pouring of the positive cast and finishing of the sculpture will take place back at our workshop. The turnaround time for the finished sculpture is approximately 2 – 3 weeks.
