I’ve realised that when things feel out of my control, I make blankets. The first one was my first ever piece of knitting, when I was pregnant with my child, several years ago. There have been a couple made for babies, with no concern, just love and anticipation. I’m making a blanket to raffle off to raise money for my friend who’s very ill, and a new mum.
When I started my Songs of Solidarity club last year, I made a blanket to be able to cover myself in colours inspired by artists who have spoken out against wrongs over the decades. And now I have learnt to crochet, thanks to (YarnTings new crochet teacher) I am now crocheting a new corner to corner blanket, using this year’s SOS batt club.
What’s nice about the fibre/batt club is that I get to be with the colour while spinning, and then again while using it to create an item of warmth and protection.
This was song number 1 for the club this year, which started in March. It’s Chumbawumba’s The day the N4z1 died’ and it’s been playing regularly in my head. The cool petrol blue, with hints of soft pale mauve and yellow red and brown shift in intensity as I crochet along, and that repetitive action, slowly building to something bigger and beautiful give me a powerful sense of calm.
