Remember - No Ice Training today.

Have a rest or keep active

Have fun! 🤩

Pictured here, Mohawks Jon Eley and NIRC Jack Whelbourne at the 2010 Olympics where GB finished 6th in the relay.
Both skaters went on to break the 5k relay World Record alongside Mohawks Richard Shoebridge and Paul Stanley in following seasons!

Great video from ISU -
Using solid corner belt.

Notes -
Feet face forward
Arm on back.
Arm holding/resting on cord is straight out ie not pulling.
Push is going through hips.
Head, shoulders hips move as one horizontally.

Variations -
Speed of pushes
Pause at end/start of movement
Cord on hips or around chest
Both arms on back for advanced core work.
Now and then, In off season and with juniors it’s always good to train both left and right crossovers for balance, symmetry and benefit of cross education.

All variations are good, just different

Ready, GO!

We love the blue line to red line club starts, where beginners are on the same start line as Olympians and current World Tour racers, toe to toe, and sometimes the springiness of the juniors have a great story to tell, winning is winning and a great feeling, even if it’s only 5 metres!

Maybe one day there won’t be a false start! 😃🏆

Guess the year and name the skaters?
PS. 4-5 (now) Olympians in view

What we love from this clip is how the club has adapted over the years and generations of skaters who have come through the club, in this past group we were in a Train to Train phase, building athletic capacity to move onto the GB team programme, alongside key technique and racing skills.

Right now we are building skater skills and confidence in readiness for this phase with an excellent training group and amazing (modest) coaches Jo Eley and Tom Iveson - both Olympians and ISU medalists, Jo also a former national team coach.

We have a small number of spaces for experienced skaters (in any skates) in the under 16 group to join for trial sessions, shout up and contact the club if interested.

Unfortunately the over 16 groups are at capacity for now, likely to free up around the summer.

When do you need to sharpen?
When your skates are no longer sharp!

The club has jigs and stones that parents or skaters can use before and after a session if they don’t have their own.

Speak to coaches and experienced skaters if you aren’t sure about the sharpness of blades and learning to sharpen.

If you are looking to get strong in a good skating position, you 100% need to be doing skate imitations off the ice.

Here is a walk through session and exercise guide.

Younger and developing athletes need to be wary of peak growth phases so if you experience knee pain or any concern please speak to coaches and doctors.

Yesterday we did some edges drills on the straights, also helping weight transfer through the hips, from leg to leg.

Then doing circles drills, keeping body position and having pressure through each push, it doesn’t have to be fast.

Finally putting into practice in some short laps and some accelerations / starts to keep the mind and legs firing quickly and well coordinated.
