Members of the public are invited to a Greek Lenten Bake Sale at St Julian’s Church, Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, on Sunday 22 March.

Sweet & savoury (vegan) bakes and hot soup are available. The sale is being held by the Shrewsbury Orthodox Church to raise funds for charitable causes that help the poor and needy.

Greek dishes for the 40-day Lenten fast in the lead up to Easter are meat and dairy-free. Some Romanian and British Lenten food will also be available. Both cash and card taken.

The sale will start following the Liturgy at around 12 noon.

A fascinating exploration into the history of the early Christian Church will be given in Shrewsbury tomorrow by a world leading theologian and other speakers, as part of the 1700th anniversary celebrations of the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), which is being celebrated around the world.

The Very Reverend Professor John Behr, of the University of Aberdeen, the former Dean of St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological College in New York, is regarded as an international scholar on the early Church and the formation of Christian theology. He will give two keynote talks alongside two other learned speakers.

This is the last chance to buy the last few remaining tickets for the event which will examine the historical and theological context of the council and its enduring significance.

The symposium will cover the first 300 years of Christianity, from persecution and secret worship through to Roman imperial acceptance. By the time the First Council of Nicaea was convened, Christianity had only been legal in the empire for a little over a decade.

By 325 AD the traditional faith, that had been handed down by the Apostles, faced a new different kind of threat. The historic meeting of bishops, from across the Roman Empire, in Nicaea, was a pivotal moment. Among the assembled were those who had suffered torture and mutilation for their faith during Roman persecution. The stage was set for an extraordinary gathering.

The symposium is the last in a series of events, held in Shrewsbury, as part of worldwide ‘Nicaea 2025’ anniversary celebrations. It is jointly hosted by the Shrewsbury Orthodox Church and the Thyateira Midlands Ecclesiastical Seminary.

Reverend Professor John Behr is regarded as one of the leading patristics scholars in the world. He will be one of three speakers and will give two talks during the day.

The historic First Council of Nicaea drew bishops from across the Roman Empire, shortly after the legalisation of Christianity. It played a pivotal role in laying the foundations of Christian unity and affirming the founding Apostolic faith in the divinity of Christ at a critical and turbulent time in history.
