The community theatre/amateur route was my way back to the arts.

Coming from a West Indian immigrant background, a 'profession' was my path after high school, despite my desperation and protestation and my creative 'calling'. My mother had no frame of reference for that and I had little agency.

It took 20 years of a toxic marriage to give me the space to 'find my place'.

When my relationship was in the deepest, darkest depths, a spiteful gauntlet of 'you always said you could act. Go on then, what are you waiting for' was my spur to join a local and 75 year established amateur dramatic group in my local town.

It felt like the hardest thing I had done - in so many years - to be me - without the coercive, aloof husband and without my children to give me purpose.

But those years in community theatre rebuilt my artistic passion, gave me huge amounts of on stage and backstage experience, filled my confidence quotient, spurred me on to find a new way to be.

Bravo to community/amateur theatre, where passion and commitment drives them forward and opportunities really do abound. They are much needed and much underrated. I owe this pathway. Big time. 🙏🏽🌹

For a very limited time (from now until 00.00am Thurs 16 Jan 2025), 'Nothing to Lose' by Sarah McCay Tam is available to listen to online!

We're so excited for this audio play - four and a half years in the making (Thanks covid!) to be finally heard. If you want to support us with a tiny £3 ticket donation you can listen via Ko-Fi (you do need to register an account but the process is quick & fairly painless) here https://lnkd.in/exv3cfhG or you can listen via our website here https://lnkd.in/ef-MvJyU .

Nothing to Lose is a darkly comedic audio drama about a cancer support group who decide to risk it all to leave their loved ones with something to remember them by, while also having a little fun and rediscovering themselves on the way. The play is 47 mins long, contains strong language and themes of death and terminal illness which may be triggering for some.

I really hope some of you might listen and be part of our inaugural audience before we submit it to the UK Radio Festival later this week!

Love & light to you all! Tara x

Hello again, lovely friends. I'm throwing a little teaser video here to ask for your support! Pls read til the end if you can bear it!
During lockdown 2020, I directed & performed in a hugely poignant and darkly comic piece intended for fringe but which we quickly turned into an audio play when that was no longer an option!
Trigger warning - it's about a cancer support group who, deciding they have 'Nothing to Lose', decide to rob a bank on the High St, using an ice cream van as a getaway vehicle.
It's written by my bff - another fabulous female moving away from journalism and into writing - novels and plays.
Anyway, I'm bothering you with this bse we're finally submitting it to the UK Radio Drama Festival but it has to have a public 'airing ' in advance of next Thursday's deadline, to be eligible.
So, next week, I'll be crowdfunding with a very, tiny ticket price and premiering on YouTube.
Pls don't feel pressured to buy a ticket but I'd be super grateful if you could spread the word to anyone who might be keen on audio drama. It's 47 mins long! All the creatives worked gratis during the super difficult time that lockdown was, so if we can recoup any of those costs at all, it would be an absolute joy!
(Ps. I've just thrown this trailer together as a teaser, it's not super quality. The audio production however, is pretty good - despite being recorded remotely!).
